Sam Burns made birdies on six of his last holes in the second round of the AT&T Byron Nelson to sign for a career-low 10-under 62. He takes the lead by two shots in his first start since winning his first PGA Tournament at Innisbrook two weeks ago. Should he win on Sunday, he would become the first player to win his first two PGA titles in consecutive starts since Camilo Villegas in 2008.

“The biggest thing for me is just seeing the hard work that we put in it, start seeing results from that,” said Burns. “A lot of times you don’t know how long the results are going to take. It’s cool to see some feedback from the progress we’ve made back home and seeing it in tournament play as well.”

Although Burns’ score doesn’t reflect it, the wind picked up during the second round and scores rose along with it with much fewer rounds in the 60s than during the first round.

First round leader Jordan Spieth made just three birdies on Friday and slipped back into a share of sixth place at 11-under but is still in his best position for a top-10 finish in five years. Spieth won the Valero Texas Open in April, ending a four-year title drought and came T3 in the Masters the following week.

“There is no reason for me not to trust everything I’m doing,” said Spieth. “At this point, I’ve got an opportunity to contend here, and if I can get myself a chance on Sunday, that is the best prep for this tournament and also next week.”

Lee Westwood, returning to competition golf for the first time in a month, improved on his first round 71 with a 64 and is T22 at 9-under.

“I don’t want to call it prep for next week, but I prefer to go into a major championship being competitive the week before.”
