Sam Burns shot a 3-under 69 on Saturday to retain the lead of the AT&T Byron Nelson in spite of making his first bogeys of the tournament at the first and sixth holes.

“I don’t have to play perfect,” he said. “(I) always felt for a long time I had to play perfect on Sunday to win. That’s just not the case.”

“You’re going to make mistakes. You need to limit those.”

Burns is hoping to become the first player to get his first two PGA Tour title in back-to-back events since Camilo Villegas in 2008.

A shot behind Burns is South Korean K.H. Lee who fired a 67 and could earn a spot in next week’s PGA Championship with a win.

“We have more holes, 18 holes, so never think about win,” said Lee. “So no pressure (on) myself and just keep positive and play golf and then we see.”

Local favourite Jordan Spieth made six birdies from the 6th to the 14th but lost his momentum with consecutive bogeys at the 15th and 16th before closing his round with an eagle at the par-5 18th for a 66. He is tied alongside Charl Schwartzel (66), Matt Kuchar (66) and Alex Noren (70) at 17-under.

“Once it got on the green, it looked good,” said Spieth of his eagle. “Started the putter raise and I wasn’t positive it was going in because the angle it was coming in at. I wanted to do the no look to the crowd, but, I mean, it was a really cool moment.”

Tee times for Sunday have been moved earlier and players will play in threesomes in a bid to avoid the heavy rain in the forecast.
