2015 champion Matt Fitzpatrick fired a chip-in eagle at the par-5 15th, four birdies and two bogeys to close with a 4-under 68 and take the 54-hole lead at 12-under at the Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo.

“It would be amazing,” said the Englishman. “To do it ten years apart would be pretty cool, too, I think. Looking forward to the opportunity.

“As I was out there today, it’s just really enjoyable to be in these situations. Scottie Scheffler must be absolutely buzzing every week.

“It’s really nice to be in contention, playing solid and give yourself a chance of winning a golf tournament.”

Alex Noren made an eagle at the par-5 17th and carded a bogey-free 65 to move into second place at 11-under.

“It feels amazing,” said the Swede.

“I struggled yesterday and the first day. I scored well the first day, and then talked to my coach, needed to work on some stuff.

“Came here a little bit earlier this morning, which I never do before a late round. It paid off today.”

England’s Marco Penge, who won at last week’s Danish Golf Championship, closed with a bogey-free 63 for a share of third place at 10-under alongside Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard who made one birdie and three bogeys on the front nine and added seven birdies on the back nine for a 67.
