Justin Rose increases lead, Koepka makes cut

Farmers Insurance Open R2

Justin Rose of England lines up a putt on the 16th green on day two of The 152nd Open championship at Royal Troon

England’s Justin Rose fired an eagle at the par-5 6th as well as six birdies and one bogey on the South Course at Torrey Pines to post a 17-under 127, the lowest 36-hole score in relation to par at the Farmers Insurance Open since 1983.

His 127 total is one stroke shy of his career best 36-hole score on Tour (126/2010 Travelers Championship) and his four-stroke lead ties the tournament-record 36-hole margin (2008/Tiger Woods, 1955/Tommy Bolt, 1952/Ted Kroll).

“I’m feeling great. Obviously, yeah, that was two special rounds of golf. Today probably even more so just given it’s hard to often follow up a low one. Obviously this week you kind of go from the easy course to the tough course but it was really kind of cool to keep momentum up out there,” said Rose.

“I felt like decision making was spot on in terms of how I managed my game, and obviously every shot was not going to be perfect out there, but when I was in a little bit of trouble, the putter would come through for me or I’d be disciplined with when I was slightly out of position, really played for the fat of the green and, you know, give myself like a good two-putt opportunity from 40 feet. So I felt like all in all I managed the game — managed the game really well more than played perfectly.

“I feel like in my career I’ve won on tough golf courses generally so that’s my M.O. I would say. It’s the kind of a place I enjoy. It’s one of my favorite tournaments on Tour just the whole area, the whole atmosphere, the whole vibe. Whether it be Torrey Pines or Del Mar or the surrounding area, it’s just one of those places I feel good.”

Rose featured in two high-profile playoffs last season. He won the first FedExCup Playoffs event defeating J.J. Spaun at the FedEx St. Jude Championship but was defeated by Rory McIlroy at The Masters.

Ireland’s Seamus Power finished bogey/eagle (par-5 9th, North Course) to reach 13-under and take solo second place at the halfway mark. He leads the field in Strokes Gained: Putting (5.636).

American Joel Dahmen, playing out of the No. 111-125 FedExCup Fall standings, got into the field on Monday when Patton Kizzire withdrew. He notched three eagles in round two at the North Course (par-5s 10th, 5th and 9th) as well as four birdies and one bogey to sign for a 63, reach 11-under and take a share of third place.

He had already made one eagle in his first round and is the first player to make four eagles in a week at the Farmers Insurance Open
since 1983.

Compatriot Max McGreevy made one bogey and six birdies at the North Course for a 67 and his share of third place.

Making his first start in a non-major on the PGA Tour since the 2022 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play via the Returning Member Program, American Brooks Koepka made an eagle at the par-5 17th as well as three birdies and one bogey for a 68 at the North Course to make the cut on the number, posting his 350th under-par round on Tour (627 rounds).

The nine-time winner is making his 187th start and fifth at the Farmers Insurance Open where he has now made the cut twice (T41/2015). His eagle at the 17th marks the 99th eagle of his PGA Tour career.

Michael Brennan was disqualified after the first round for a breach of Model Local Rule G-11; use of non-permitted green-reading materials.
