Marc Leishman, of Australia, and Americans Russell Henley, Talor Gooch and Luke List were tied for the lead of the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open when play was suspended due to darkness.

Houston Open 2021 R1

“Got off to a good start,” said Leishman. “That first hole’s a brute of a hole and to make a long putt for birdie there was a nice way to start the day.

“My irons were really on and gave myself a lot of chances and made the putts. It was pretty stress free. Disappointing to bogey the last and not have a bogey-free round, but on a course like this I’m pretty happy with just making one bogey.”

Houston Open 2021 R1

Leishman, Henley and Gooch all closed with a 5- under 65 while Henley had three holes left to play.

“kind of an interesting day,” said List. “We knew we weren’t going to finish so just trying to get as much as we could in. The course was gettable today, a little softer conditions from the rain this morning.

“I was pretty patient today. Hit some good shots obviously, and I think you can take advantage of your length out there. I’m hitting a lot of drivers, which is nice for me, and I like the golf course a lot.”

Houston Open 2021 R1

American Jason Dufner closed with a 66 to take solo fifth place followed by compatriot Keith Mitchell (67), Wyndham Clark, Adam Long and Martin Trainer as well as Canadian Ben Silverman (67) and Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas in a share of sixth place at 3-under

“I think the course responded pretty well to the weather we had. It was a pretty strong storm that pushed through,” said Dufner. “Thankful that it pushed through pretty quickly. It was soft early, but sun’s out now, the wind’s blowing a little bit, so the course is drying out.

“I thought I played pretty well. I was pretty happy for the most part everything I did, but a couple key parts kind of in the middle of the round a couple times helped kind of glue that round together and maybe turned a 70, 69, 68 into a 66. So I’ll take those two shots or three shots with those saves and look to improve on my ball-striking.”
