Scottie Scheffler signed for a 69 on Saturday to reach 7-under and take a one shot lead in the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open. The American, who turned pro in 2018, holds the 54-hole lead outright for the first time.

“I’m fairly satisfied with my round. I kept myself in position. Things were kind of getting a little iffy there for me for a little bit. I felt like I was playing good golf and I was 1 over through 13 holes and I felt like I was playing a lot better than that. Definitely nice to make a few birdies down the stretch to get things back in the red.”

Scheffler has been on form recently and was a contender last week at Mayakoba until he made a double bogey on the 16th for a 66 and had to settle for fourth place.

“I feel like I’m playing solid golf right now. I’m hitting a decent amount of fairways, a decent amount of greens, starting to roll the ball pretty good. there’s a few days where the putts may have not all gone in, but I always seem to be hitting them right around the cup at the appropriate speed so they’re bound to start falling eventually.”

Five players share second place at 6-under including Kevin Tway who was leading into the 17th where he found the water leading to a bogey then missed his putt on the final hole for another and closed with a 73.

Venezuelan an Jhonattan Vegas, who hasn’t won since the RBC Canadian Open in 2017, is also tied in second place after a 68 and is the only non-American player in the top-9.

“This course, just doesn’t sound like it has anything to it, but it’s just tricky. It’s kind of one of those courses where it’s really hard to get the ball close to the holes. Obviously it’s a brand new golf course still, conditions are probably not as good as we probably would have liked, but it’s still a phenomenal playable golf course. Obviously the rain didn’t help at the beginning of the week, but it’s a course that as it grows, it’s going to be a super exciting course on Tour.

“So knowing that you can’t really get too aggressive and too excited and fire at every pin. You kind of have to take your time on the course and try to put a good round together and that’s what you saw. Especially not playing the ball up obviously made it harder today because playing on bermuda, chipping in Bermuda is really difficult, especially on new grass. So you can tell that it’s just playing hard.”

Houston Open 2021 R3

Overnight leader Martin Trainer made a single birdie, five bogeys and a double bogey at the par-4 6th to close with a 74 for his share of second place.

“That was a really tough pin on 18 and I had a really hard chip and a really hard putt and I managed to execute them both pretty well. So feels good to finish on a good note.

“All I can do is just play the best I can. We’ll see what happens tomorrow. Maybe it will be more of the same, maybe will be better, I’ll find out. I just want to keep making good swings, I guess.”
