“I would tell him no”: LIV Golfer makes startling Ryder Cup admission

Sergio Garcia looked on the right track for a Ryder Cup return but recent performances may ruin his chances

LIV Golfer Sergio Garcia finished the PGA Championship with a final round of 69 on Sunday. But are his Ryder Cup ambitions up in smoke?

The Spaniard was competing in his first PGA Championship since 2022 and he ended up finishing the tournament at seven over par.

Rounds of 68 and 69 were undone by an opening 75 and third round 79, derailing any hopes of making the top ten.

Given his individual performances in the 2025 LIV Golf league, he will certainly be disappointed with his efforts.

The 2017 Masters champion currently sits fourth in the standings, securing a win in Hong Kong.

It looked as though this victory enhanced his chances of a potential captains pick for the Ryder Cup. Luke Donald had appeared to offer Garcia an olive branch, especially as he rejoined the DP World Tour in November 2024.

After his performance at Quail Hollow, he might not even accept a spot in the European team for the match later this year…

Sergio Garcia’s Ryder Cup hopes are hanging in the balance

After finishing his final round at the PGA, the 45-year-old spoke to the media. Inevitably, talk of a Ryder Cup return was discussed.

“The way I’m playing, even if Luke offered me a pick right now, I would tell him no,” Garcia told the press.

“Obviously, I need to get better. I need to get more where I was just before the Masters. You know, just show myself and show everyone that my game is solid, and it can help Team Europe. It’s as simple as that.

“The good thing is that there’s still, you know, two or three months until the team is finalised. So, I’ll have time to gain some confidence and improve a little bit on my game.”

He has failed to crack the top 40 across either of his previous two LIV individual events in South Korea or Mexico. This means he is now trailing leader Joaquin Nieman by 47 points.

Should Garcia rediscover his form over the next six LIV tournaments, he might remain on Donald’s radar.

More poor performances, however, will surely end his chances of making an 11th appearance in the Ryder Cup.
