“Master”ful McIlroy sets record 36-hole margin

Leads by six shots, concludes with six birdies over last seven holes.

Rory McIlroy at the Wells Fargo Championship

AUGUSTA, GA. Dealing with suffocating pressure is a central dimension in major championship golf. Some players are inspired by it — others will simply wilt.

For a period of over 10 years Rory McIlroy could not cross the threshold and win a major after brilliantly accumulating four by the age of 25.

The questions mounted. The pressure only increased.

At the 2025 Masters it was Rory who changed the storyline in not only winning at Augusta but becoming just the sixth member of the ultra-exclusive career grand slam club.

The pressure the Northern Irishman faced in ending his major-less streak was now in his rear-view mirror. A sense of freedom to perform was present.

The 2026 Masters is now at its halfway point and McIlroy is in firm command — setting the new record for most strokes leading after 36 holes — six shots. His two-day total of 67-65 places him ahead of Patrick Reed and Sam Burns who are at 138.

McIlroy’s second round got off quickly — three consecutive birdies starting at the par-5 2nd. Then a pause in the momentum took place with two bogies at the 5th and 10th respectively. A lead that appeared to be on the verge of growing was now shrinking.

When McIlroy arrived at the par-3 12th the margin had been reduced to a single shot.

At this point, the shadows of Rory’s past majors began to surface. How would he respond? Would the retreat continue? Would he be mentally strong enough and stabilize himself?

Over the final seven holes McIlroy not only secured his hold on the lead but demonstrated tour de force shotmaking — fashioning six birdies over the last seven holes. The total command demonstrated brought back flashbacks to the heyday of Tiger Woods.

Building a large 36-hole lead is not a new matter for McIlroy. In 2011 he did similarly at Congressional during the US Open. He would go on to win by eight shots.

The 2026 Masters still has two days to go. But given the focus and discipline showed by McIlroy it will take a herculean effort by any of the challengers forcing Rory to look over his shoulder.

Much was expected of Rory when he entered the pro ranks. The rocket like start to his career had many opining he was ready to be the next Tiger. Then a pause happened — 10 plus years — and many questioned if the initial assessment of his golf talents were overstated.

Should McIlroy defend his Masters title, he would join Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Woods as the only players to successfully win in consecutive years. Heady company indeed.

For the last several years, the focus in pro golf has been the stellar play of world ranked number one Scottie Scheffler. McIlroy’s re-emergence demonstrates a clear move in replacing Scheffler at the top of the pyramid. No doubt the Texan will not go away meekly.

A second green jacket could well be the springboard for additional majors to come his way. The final 36 holes at Augusta National will certainly be telling.

Notes

• Nine birdies marks McIlroy’s most in a single round at the Masters (7 twice, R1/2011, R4/2016) and his most in a single round of a major championship (8 birdies, R1/2014 PGA Championship).

• Making his first PGA Tour start this season, American Patrick Reed recorded two DP World Tour wins in 2026 (Hero Dubai Desert Classic, Qatar Masters). Joins leader Rory McIlroy as the two players in the field with two rounds in the 60s.

• First-round co-leader Sam Burns of the USA (T2/-6) birdied three of his last four holes en route to a 1-under 71; seeks first major championship title; owns two top-10 results in 22 prior major championship starts (T7/2025 US Open, T9/2024 US Open).

• England’s Justin Rose (T4/-5) posted 3-under 69, his 18th sub-70 round at the Masters, but his first in round two (21 appearances).

• With 70-69, Ireland’s Shane Lowry (T4/-5) opened with back-to-back under-par rounds for the second time in his 11th appearance (other time: 2025/71-68); best Masters finish: T3/2022.

• 2025 FedExCup champion Tommy Fleetwood of England (T4/-5) owns one top-10 result in nine prior appearances at the Masters (T3/2024); four top-10s in five starts this season (T4/AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, T7/The Genesis Invitational, T8/The Players Championship, T10/Valero Texas Open).

• For the first time in his 142 major championship rounds, England’s Tyrrell Hatton (T7/-4) hit all 18 greens in regulation; joins Jim Furyk (2009/R1/66) and Kevin Na (2020/R1/73) as the only players to achieve this feat in the last 30 years at the Masters.

• American World No.1 Scottie Scheffler’s (T24/E) streak of 11 consecutive rounds of par-or-better at the Masters Tournament was snapped with a second-round 74; only two players have a longer streak of par-or-better rounds in Masters history: Tiger Woods (16), Jon Rahm (15).

• 54 professionals at 4-over 148 from a field of 85 professionals and six amateurs; 16 strokes between leader (-12) and cutline (+4) ties second-most in Masters history (19 strokes/1976/131-150, 16 strokes/2015/130-146).

• Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan (T7/-4) is the best of the 22 first-time competitors, eight of whom made the cut: Chris Gotterup (T7/-3), Ben Griffin (T7/-3), Michael Brennan (T20/-1), Ryan Gerard (T24/E), Jacob Bridgeman (T32/+1) Marco Penge (T32/+1), Sam Stevens (T39/+2).

• For the second consecutive year, no amateurs made the cut
