Emiliano Grillo held on to the lead of the Mayakoba Golf Classic on Saturday after a 3-under 68 comprising of five birdies and two bogeys for a 16-under total.

“Started in the lead, finished in the lead, that's kind of the idea, ” said Grillo. “Hopefully, one more of those.”

Grillo has only won once on Tour in the 2015 Safeway Open and this will be the first time he takes a lead into the final round.

One shot behind lies Tom Hoge, still to win on the PGA Tour, who birdied five of his last six holes for a 65.

Adam Long fired an impressive seven birdies on his front nine but lost his momentum after a bogey at the 11th and made only two more birdies for a 63, lies in fourth at 13-under.

Justin Thomas, who started his round in 34th place at 3-under, fired an incredible bogey-free 62 to put himself in contention in fourth place at 12-under.

“I felt like I could have shot 60, 61, 62 and shot that. So I just really just tried to go out there and didn't really have a game plan or mentality, just try to hit the fairways and, with the ball in hand, just attack and make a bunch of birdies. And we did.”

Tony Finau was tied in second place alongside Hoge after the second round and started well with a hole-in-one on the fourth followed by three birdies in the next four holes to get within one shot of Grillo but things changed at the turn and he bogeyed the 11th and 12th and failed to make any more birdies before closing with another bogey to sign for a 69, tied in seventh place at 11-under.

“Didn't have it on the back nine for me. Luckily I'm still within reach,” said Finau. “A lot of guys scored today. Hopefully, I'm one of those guys tomorrow that takes it low. It's going to take probably a low to mid-60s round for me tomorrow.”
