Englishman Jordan Smith, the 2017 champion, emerged from a high scoring day in Hamburg with a two-shot lead in the Porsche European Open.

He recovered from an early bogey at the par-4 4th to close with a 68 and heads into the weekend at 6-under.

“I have really good memories of most of the holes around here," he said. "Winning back then, even though it was five years ago, I still remember a lot of it.

"I’m looking forward to continuing the good stuff and seeing how the weekend goes."

“I scrambled unbelievably well. On the back nine I was getting up and down on most of the holes and took the chances when I had them. I’m really happy with how things have gone."

Frenchman Victor Perez, who won last week's Dutch Open, carded a 71 to take solo second place at 4-under.

"I’m just trying to ride it as much as possible," said Perez. "I think we try to use those moments as players, when things go your way you hit shots and it feels easy, you try not to play quickly, which is not a bad thing for me, and you just get on with it.

"There’s a lot of golf left. It’s a long weekend, I think it’s supposed to be the same weather, nice and not very windy. I expect the Tour to set the course as difficult as they can to control the score.

"I’m very pleased again. I thought the course played very difficult. The pins were harder than yesterday, there was less wind but sometimes it’s still just as difficult."

Fellow Frenchman Julien Brun (72) lies in third place at 3-under alongside Dane Niklas Nørgaard Møller (67) and Swede Joakim Lagergren who co-led after the first round but slipped down the leaderboard after carding a 74.

Haotong Li, who shared the overnight lead, scored a 75 and shares sixth place with Frenchman Julien Guerrier (73).
