There are just 64 golf clubs around the world with the bona fide right to a 'Royal' title, bestowed by a member of the United Kingdom royal family.

The latest clubs to receive the honour are:

โ€ข In April 2013, the Homburger Golf Club, founded in 1899 near Frankfurt in Germany, was granted the Royal title by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II;

โ€ข In September 2010 a warrant of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II granted the status to Auckland Golf Club;

โ€ข In October 2005, the Mayfair Golf & Country Club in Edmonton, Canada, was granted Royal status by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II;

โ€ข ln 2004, Wellington Golf Club received the Royal title from HRH The Duke of York, himself a keen, single-handicap golfer.

All the Royal Golf Clubs are located in the United Kingdom (34 clubs) or the Commonwealth (26 clubs), with four exceptions:

โ€ข Royal Dublin, awarded the title in 1891 by Queen Victoria.

โ€ข Royal Curragh in County Kildare, Ireland, originally granted the title in September 1910.

โ€ข Marianske Lazne Golf Club in the Czech Republic, which was honoured in 2003. This club had historically strong connections with British Royalty, having been a favourite holiday destination for King Edward VII who visited the course on ten occasions after performing the opening ceremony on August 21, 1905.

โ€ข Royal Homburger, the third oldest club in Germany, awarded the title on April 8, 2013 in commemoration of the role of English visitors and members of the Royal Family, and in particular the Prince of Wales, to the town of Homberg and its spa, in the founding of the Club. The first President was Field Marshall HRH The Duke of Cambridge, a cousin of Queen Victoria, and the Prince of Wales, by now His Majesty King Edward VII, was the first Honorary Member.

The oldest golf club to bear the Royal name is The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, founded in 1745 and granted Royal status by King William IV in 1834. It was not however the first club to receive the title; that honour belongs to Royal Perth Golf Club, founded in 1824, which received the patronage of King William IV a year earlier, in 1833.

The 64 clubs, in alphabetical order, are:

โ€ขย Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, founded in 1745, granted Royal patronage by William IV in 1834.

โ€ขย Royal Aberdeen, founded in 1780, granted Royal patronage in by Edward VII in 1903 (although Leopold had given patronage in 1872 without the "Royal" title being applied).

โ€ขย Royal Adelaide, Australia, founded in 1892 and granted Royal patronage by George V in 1923.

โ€ขย Royal Ascot, founded in 1887 and granted Royal patronage the same year by Queen Victoria, and again by Elizabeth II in 1977.

โ€ขย Royal Ashdown Forest, founded in 1888 and granted Royal patronage by Queen Victoria in 1893.

โ€ขย Royal Auckland, New Zealand, founded in 1894, and granted Royal patronage by Elizabeth II in 2010.

โ€ขย Royal Belfast, founded in 1881 and granted Royal patronage by Edward, Prince of Wales in 1885.

โ€ขย Royal Birkdale, founded in 1889, granted Royal patronage by George VI in 1951.

โ€ขย Royal Blackheath, founded in 1766 and granted Royal patronage in 1857.

โ€ขย Royal Burgess, founded in 1773 and granted Royal patronage by George V in 1929.

โ€ขย Royal Calcutta, India, founded in 1829 (the oldest golf club in the world ooutside the British Isles), granted Royal patronage by George V in 1911.

โ€ขย Royal Canberra, Australia, founded in 1926 and granted Royal patronage by George V in 1933.

โ€ขย Royal Cape, South Africa, founded in 1885, granted Royal patronage by George V in 1910.

โ€ขย Royal Cinque Ports, founded in 1892, granted Royal patronage by George V in 1910.

โ€ขย Royal Colombo, Sri Lanka, founded in 1879 and granted Royal patronage by George V in 1928.

โ€ขย Royal Colwood, Canada, founded in 1913 and granted Royal patronage by George V in 1931.

โ€ขย Royal County Down, founded in 1889, granted Royal patronage by Edward VII in 1908.

โ€ขย Royal Cromer, founded in 1888 and granted Royal patronage by Edward, Prince of Wales (Iater Edward VII) in 1887.

โ€ขย Royal Curragh, founded 1858, originally granted the title in September 1910, club's Royal status reinstated in 2013.
