Caroline Hedwall is the first woman to hold the solo lead in a European Tour event after firing a 64, the lowest round of the week so far, in the second round of the 2021 Scandinavian Mixed Hosted by Henrik & Annika.

Hedwall, who has six titles to her name on the Ladies European Tour, carded two eagles at the par-5s 6th and 16th as well as five birdies and a single bogey at the par-4 second hole.

“I was a bit lucky out there today,” she said. “I made two eagles and made a bunker shot – it was very enjoyable!

“If you look at the leaderboard, it looks like they have set it up pretty fair, but it’s hard to judge. I think looking at the mix of the players on the leaderboard, I think they have done a good job because it’s obviously tough.

“It is good being back in Sweden and I’m just going to try and enjoy myself.”

One shot behind her at 12-under is playing partner Joost Luiten who followed up his opening round 67 with a bogey-free 65.

“These girls (in his group) were playing great. They hit it a long way, I think they hit it as long as me, so they could really take some holes on, and they took advantage of it. They were making a lot of birdies, Caroline had two eagles as well, that really helps. I tried to keep up with them and I managed to do that.

“What I do is focus on myself, there’s nothing else I can do. I just need to put in a score myself and then I’ll see where that puts me on the leaderboard compared to the men and the women. I think that’s the key. It was a bit of getting used to it because I was the only man in the group, so it was a bit of a different rhythm, but it makes it fun to play different formats and it’s fun to see the girls as well. They really crushed the ball; well,you see that in the scores.

“I’m hitting the ball well off the tee, hitting good iron shots, not missing many greens, putter was pretty good today. Yesterday I felt like I left a couple too many out there, but I feel if you hit the greens here you have some chances. The greens aren’t really quick so you can be pretty aggressive with the putts and I managed to make a couple.

Tied for third at 11-under are Steven Brown (68) and Darren Fichardt (65) who both eagled the par-5 4th.

“It feels good,” said Brown. “It’s nice to see her (Annabel Dimmock) about. We play a lot at home together, and it’s good for both of us. We have some good games back at Wentworth, so it always keeps you sharp. I’ve actually really enjoyed the event, I didn’t really know what to expect coming in. But it’s been a really good, fun week so far.

“In a couple of ways it was probably more pleasing than yesterday, a lot windier this afternoon, the wind picked up on our back nine and it was probably the windiest it’s been all week which, looking at the forecast for tomorrow, might not have been such a bad thing to get used to it. Very pleased. I struck it really good again, would be nice to hole a few more putts, but that’s always the case.

“The thing with the wind around here is the greens are so firm, so that’s going to be the most difficult thing, getting on the right side of the holes so you’ve actually got a chance. If you’re downwind and short-sided it’s almost impossible. Maybe a different strategy tomorrow, we’ll see what we get.”
