Five-way tie at the top of the leaderboard in Hawaii

Sony Open in Hawaii R2

Davis Riley sinks 3-foot putt for the lead after rain delay at the Charles Schwab Challenge

American Davis Riley made one bogey and seven birdies to match the low round of the day with 6-under 64 (Ryan Gerard/T10) and join the tie at 9-under at the top of the Sony Open in Hawaii leaderboard.

The 29-year-old leads the field in Strokes Gained: Putting (8.764) and birdies (14).

“Today I putted really well,” said Riley, “but I definitely hit the ball a little bit better [than yesterday]. It maybe wasn’t even better, I just didn’t have as many crazy shots as yesterday.

“I had a penalty stroke off the tee yesterday which really cost me and felt like I lost a lot of momentum there.

“I’ve actually got a new putter. This is my first week using it. It was one I changed into actually about a week and a half ago, so kind of a last-minute switch before we got the season started.

“It felt really good in my hands and feels really good on the greens, and it’s just matching my eye really well.

“Overall the ball striking was a little cleaner and continued some of that good putting.”

Riley seeks his third win on the PGA Tour in his 131st start (2023 Zurich Classic of New Orleans/with partner Nick Hardy;
2024 Charles Schwab Challenge). He holds his second 36-hole lead/co-lead (1-for-1 to date: 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge).

“I feel like the last year, year and a half I’ve been really up and down. There are some things ball striking I need to clean up, which I’ve definitely hit a few loose shots so far the first few days,” he added.

“I feel like I figured out a couple thing mechanically and then just honestly trying to have a little bit more fun. I felt for the most part of last year I was miserable on the course and kind of riding the ebbs and flows of golf.

“Felt like I put a lot of good work in this offseason. Every facet of the game feels pretty good. No matter how bad the golf was I’m going to chose to try to be happy and not make myself miserable.

“It’s just golf, it’s up and down, and I feel like I rode this rollercoaster a little bit more than I should have last year. So just take it day by day and learn as much as I can.”

Korean S.H. Kim fired two birdies and one bogey for a 68 to take a share of the lead. He matched his low 36-hole score on Tour (previous instance: 2021 CJ CUP @ SUMMIT) and seeks his first win in his 75th start (best finish: 2nd /2023 Fortinet Championship).

Kim holds his second 36-hole lead/co-lead (0-for-1 to date: finished 2nd at the 2023 Fortinet Championship).

Adrien Dumont de Chassart made five birdies and two bogeys to record a 67 and take his share of the lead. His 131 total is his low 36-hole score on Tour (previous: 134/three times; most recent: 2024 RSM Classic/finished T25).

He leads the field in Strokes Gained: Around the Green (3.874).

“I felt pretty comfortable today. Hit a few poor shots, but feel like my short game was there to save me at times where I didn’t hit great shots,” said the Belgian.

“Hit a lot of really good tee shots in this wind which made it a little easier to give myself some birdie opportunities. Yeah, just a solid round overall.”

The 25-year-old holds his first 36-hole lead/co-lead (previous best 36-hole position: T6/2024 RSM Classic/finished T25) and seeks his first win in his 33rd start (best finish: T3/2024 Butterfield Bermuda Championship).

Canadian Nick Taylor and American Kevin Roy who shared the overnight lead both closed with 69s having made three bogeys to retain a share of the lead.

The five-way tie marks the most players tied for the lead after 36 holes on Tour since the 2024 Valspar Championship (5).

62-year-old World Golf Hall of Fame member Vijay Singh of Fiji fired three birdies and three bogeys for a 70 and lies in T47 at 2-under. The 2005 Sony Open in Hawaii champion made his first cut in a non-major on Tour since the 2020 Memorial Tournament. With his 507th made cut, he passes Stewart Cink for the sixth-most cuts made since 1983 and becomes the oldest player to make a cut since Fred Couples (2023 Masters Tournament/63 years, 6 months, 5 days). He also becomes the oldest player since 1983 to make the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii, passing Fred Funk (2017/60 years, 7 months, 1 day).
