Robert Streb made his best tournament start and his lowest score on the PGA Tour, shooting an 11-under 61 on Thursday at the CJ Cup @ Summit in Las Vegas.

"I've never had a start like that, so it was kind of fun. Slowed down a little I guess in the middle, but it was a really, really good round.

"I think if you can get off to a hot start, the first several holes are pretty gettable. You've got a few tougher tee balls and stuff there on the back nine and some longer holes, so yeah, it always helps to get off to a hot start, too."

He is followed by four fellow Americans, a Spaniard and a Norwegian. Keith Mitchell played a bogey-free 62, Harry Higgs a 64 for third place and Hudson Swafford took a share of fourth place with a 65 alongside Sergio Garcia and a bogey-free Viktor Hovland.

“If you hit the fairways, you have good chances. It's that simple,” said Mitchell, "because if you miss the fairways, the desert is a big penalty. It just depends on luck after that. So if you can hit it in the fairways and then keep having really good speed on my putts, then I feel like we'll have a chance because there's enough birdie opportunities that if you do that, you can take advantage of them, but if you get out of posi tion out here, it can bite you ”

Scores stayed low with an average score of 68.95, the lowest this year, and only nine players going over par in a field of 78.

There was plenty of difficulty to be found for those who failed to stay on the fairway however with Rory McIlroy (68, ) Justin Thomas (69) , Dustin Johnson (74) and Justin Rose (75) finding trouble in the desert.

"It was really good apart from one bad swing. I missed a 3-wood on 17 right, messed around in the rough a little bit over there and ended up making a 7. It was sort of -- JT did a similar thing on 9, Jason did a similar thing on 12. It's one of those courses where if you just keep it in play, it's obviously very scorable, but you hit a couple just offline and you get a bad break or a little unlucky, you can make a big number and I did that on 17, but the other 17 holes were good."
