The Genesis Invitational R4

Max Homa wins second PGA title in playoff

February 18-21
The Riviera Country Club, Pacific Palisades, California
$9,300,000
Round 1, Round 2, Round 3

Max Homa started the final day of The Genesis Invitational in a three-way tie three shots behind leader Sam Burns at 7-under and fired a 66 having missed a 3-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to tie with Tony Finau at 12-under leading to a playoff.

“You’re not supposed to miss a 3-footer in front of Tiger Woods,” said Homa. “I saw him yesterday and was too scared to talk to him. But he’s forced to talk to me now.”

Luck was not with him in the first extra hole on the par-4 10th when his tee shot settled next to a tree but he managed to par, as did Finau. Homa then parred again on the next extra hole at the par-3 14th and was saved when Finau found a bunker and bogeyed.

With the 550 FedExCup points he collected with his second PGA win, Homa moves up to No. 10 in the FedExCup standings. He is also now eligible for the World Golf Championships-Workday Championship at The Concession next week as well as the Masters.

“I’ve been watching this tournament my whole life,” said Homa said, who grew up nearby in Valencia. “Wow. I didn’t think it would be like this. The city of Champions, Dodgers, Lakers, me now. It’s a weird feeling.”

Finau has had twenty one top-5 finishes since the start of the 2016-17 season and has been runner up ten times since his single PGA win in the Puerto Rico Open five years ago but this time at least his final round 64 was the low round of the weekend.

“Anytime I’ve had a chance to win, I haven’t been the guy that went low and today I was, so I can take a lot of confidence from that,” said Finau. “That’s something that I wanted to happen today to just prove to myself on Sundays that I can put myself in the thick of it and shoot a number. At the end of the day I’m going to be able to look back on that and have a lot of positives to take from it.”

“It’s bittersweet to be in this position again, but I never get tired of playing good golf and that’s what I tell myself every week. Sports is about winning, I’ve said that many times. I grew up trying to win every tournament I play, nothing’s changed. But I know at the end of the day you’re going to lose a lot more times than you’re going to win on the PGA TOUR.”

Overnight leader Sam Burns, who closed his third round on Sunday morning with a 74, fired four birdies on the front nine to make the turn in 31 but unfortunately produced three bogeys and a single bogey on the back nine to close with a 69 narrowly missing out on the playoff and finished third at 11-under.

World Number 1 Dustin Johnson, playing in the final group, started his round two shots off the lead but fired four birdies and five bogeys to close with a 72 and finished tied for eight at 6-under.
