Australian Cameron Smith narrowly missed out on a 59 on Saturday when his 12-foot birdie putt at the 18th missed and he had to make do with a 60, a course record at Liberty National, and a share of the lead at 16-under.

“It was a really, good look. It was kind of straight up the hill (and) I hit a good putt. It just kind of wobbled a little bit up the hill. Probably didn’t give it enough speed.”

Smith hit 11 of 14 fairways in the third round to give himself plenty of chances.

“My driver definitely put me in the spot today for all those birdies.”

Smith set his previous low score on the PGA Tour just two weeks ago with a 62 at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Classic.

Overnight leader Jon Rahm of Spain found the water twice at the 13th and 16th and closed with seven birdies, one bogey and a double bogey for a 67, regaining a share of the lead.

One shot behind lies South African Erik van Rooyen who produced ten birdies and a single bogey for a 62. His was one of four rounds of 62 or lower on a day when the average score was 68.3.

Americans Justin Thomas and Tony Finau are tied for fourth at 14-under after rounds of 67 and 68 respectively, followed by fellow American Tom Hoge (67), Irishman Shane Lowry (62) and Norwegian Viktor Hovland (65) in sixth at 13-under.

Sunday’s fourth round has been postponed until Monday.
