Justin Thomas recorded the lowest score in a U.S. Open at Winged Foot, scoring six birdies and a single bogey before finishing with a 25-foot birdie putt for a 5-under 65.

''Yeah, 65 is fun no matter where you play, especially at Winged Foot,'' said Thomas. ''I was in a really good frame of mind, and I was focused. I just was sticking to my routine and playing every shot, as opposed to getting ahead of myself. It's one of those rounds where… next thing you know, you make the putt on 18, you're done for the day.'

''It's helpful with three days left, but it's not even remotely close to being over. 'As great of a round and fun as it was, it's over with now, and I need to get over it.''

Thomas was not the only player to defy the odds, Patrick Reed, Thomas Pieters and Matthew Wolff are all tied one shot behind the leader.

Patrick Reed and Will Zalatoris both made hole-in-one on the 7th and Spanish amateur Eduard Rousand, playing in his first U.S. Open, holed out for eagle on the first hole while Louis Oosthuizen eagled the second.

Others did not find the course so enjoyable. Tiger Woods suffered some ups and downs, finding five bunkers in as many holes, recovering with a string of birdies then making bogey on three holes before double bogeying on the final hole for a 73.

Phil Mickelson started well with two birdies but struggled to break 80 and World Number 1 Dustin Johnson's putting let him down, he finished with a 73.

''There's a couple of guys that went a little lower than maybe expected,'' said Rory McIlroy, currently T5 at 3-under. ''But it's not as if the rest of the field are finding it that easy.''
