Valspar Championship 2021 R3
April 29 - May 02
Innisbrook Resort (Copperhead), Palm Harbor, Florida
$6,900,000
Round 1, Round 2, Round 4

Estimated reading time: 8 minutes

Sam burns closed his round with an 8-foot bogey putt to retain a share of the lead in the Valspar Championship on Saturday.

Valspar Championship 2021 R3

He started the day tied for the lead with Keegan Bradley at 12-under and made a good start with an eagle on the par-5 1st followed by birdies at the 3rd and 5th. He lost his momentum and parred his way through his round until the 17th where he bogeyed the par-4 then the 18th to finish with a 2-under 69.

"Yeah, I mean, I can't change anything from today, so tomorrow will be a fresh start and we'll try to work our process and just go out there and try to take care of business."

Valspar Championship 2021 R3

This is the third time Burns has held at least a share of the 54-hole lead this season following the Vivint Houston Open, where he finished T7, and the Genesis Invitational at Riviera where he finished third.

Bradley birdied his first and fifth holes and made bogeys at the 13th before chipping in for eagle at the par-5 14th then closed with a bogey for a 69 and a share of the lead.

Valspar Championship 2021 R3

"I just didn't hole the putts that I've been making the first two rounds. But without doing that, I still shot 69 and I'm still tied for the lead, so all good," he said.

"I know I can do it. I know I've been up here and won some big tournaments in my career, and I feel like if I go out tomorrow and stick to my process, I can have a chance coming down the end."

Valspar Championship 2021 R3

They head into the final round with a 14-under 199 score tying the 54-hole tournament record established in 2002 by K.J. Choi and matched by Adam Hadwin in 2017, who both went on to win.

Max Homa started his round four shots behind the leaders and shot a 66 comprising of two bogeys, five birdies and an eagle at the par-4 4th to close the gap to one shot.

“I just knew if I posted 4 under-ish I would at least have a chance tomorrow, but that's all you can do out here,” said Homa. “The moment you try to shoot 8 (under), you're in trouble. So yeah, feels good to have a chance.”

Valspar Championship 2021 R3

Abraham Ancer fired a 66 and is tied in fourth place alongside Ted Potter Jr. (63), Joaquin Niemann (67) and Cameron Tringale (67) at 10-under.

“There's some birdies out there,” said Ancer. “But this golf course, if you're not in the right position, man, you can make some bogeys quick.”
