Jordan Spieth is in position to win his first title since the 2017 Open Championship after a 10-under 61 on Saturday placed him in a tie for the lead with Xander Schauffele at 18-under 196 in the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

โ€œI'm excited about the position I'm in,โ€ said Spieth. โ€œI don't have - I'll be nervous, but not because I feel extra pressure to have to do anything. Just because I haven't been in the last group holding the lead in a while.โ€

"I built some freedom now seeing these results the first few days here to where I feel really good about the path I'm on. I feel good about what the long term ahead looks like for me. And sometimes that's been in question. To myself."

Spieth's 61 tied his career-low round and the ten birdies he fired on Saturday were the most he had produced in a single round in his PGA career.

"I just felt like I stayed really, really patient and struck the ball well," Spieth said. "Just tried to hit it to the fat parts of the greens when I was out of position and try and attack when I could."

Schauffele shot birdies on four of his last six holes and a single bogey at the par-4 2nd for a 65 to join Spieth in the lead.

"I just kind of hung in there and sort of capitalized on the holes I needed to on the back nine," said Schauffele.

"Hopefully I can get off to a good start (on Sunday), but if I don't, I'd like to think I am playing good enough to make up shots. Just stay patient. It's something I didn't do in the past. We'll find out. This is something I wanted to do, to get into contention to see if I can win a golf tournament."

Steve Stricker, who could become the oldest Tour winner on Sunday and was second after the second round, shot a 69 and dropped back into a tie for seventh at 13-under alongside Brooks Koepka and James Hahn.

"I actually played from tee-to-green better than I did the first two days, I thought," said Stricker. "Hit a lot of quality shots. Just didn't make the putts that I had been making the last couple days."

Koepka made it to the weekend on Friday, avoiding his fourth straight missed cut, but was disappointed with the way he played. He was even par through twelve holes with one birdie at the par-4 9th and one bogey at the par-4 11th but birdied five of his last six holes to sign for a 5-under 66.

โ€œIt was just frustrating today to be honest with you,โ€ said Koepka. โ€œI felt like I was in between [clubs] the whole front nine and really just didn't have a good number and didn't make that many quality shots.โ€
