Defending champion Viktor Hovland fired a bogey-free 62 to take the lead in the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba.

“That was fun today. Obviously got off to a nice start and it was nice to have one of those rounds where you can kind of keep it going throughout the day instead of maybe slowing down towards the end there where, frankly, there’s some tough holes.”
The Norwegian started the day in a share of third place three shots behind the leader and produced his lowest score in his PGA Tour career to reach 19-under.

“I think with it being a narrow course helps me because my bad shots tend to not go in the trees, so if I can always stay in between the tree lines, I can — I can kind of hit a lot of approaches on the greens because they are soft, and if I hit good iron shots and they land on the pin, they’re going to stop on the pin.
“Whenever I get into a flow where I’ve got my number s dialed in and I’m swinging it good, it’s just kind of point and shoot. With the speed of these greens and being not so undulated, and usually when there is break, it tends to go just one way, and so for me, it allows me to be pretty aggressive on the putts and kind of trust my reads.”

Two shots behind in second place, American Talor Gooch’s bogey-free 63 featured an eagle at the par-5 13th.
“It was one of those days you wish you could bottle that come forth up and keep it forever,” said Gooch. “The game came easy today. I hit a bunch of fairways, hit a bunch of greens. Nice when you get a chip-in, you make a 30-footer and those are the type of things you need to have happen to turn it from a 67 to 63, 65. I wish I could be that comfortable more often, that’s for sure.

Compatriot Justin Thomas lies a further shot behind after signing for a blemish-free 64.
“I’m very, very proud of myself to be where I’m at. It’s funny, I played with [Patrick] Cantlay the first
two rounds of the BMW this year and he had a very similar start. He was off to a very, very sluggish start. He was hitting it really bad and scrambling for pars and bogeys, and on an extremely easy golf course like that, I think he was a couple over around the turn, and we all know what happened that week.
“So I kind of remind myself of that because I watched him just stay patient and plod his way along, and I know this is a course, you can get on crazy kinds of runs out here. It feels good to know I haven’t really done anything special, but I’ve just kind of checked the boxes and done a lot of things I need to do and put ourselves in a good spot.
