Matthew Wolff lost some momentum with two late bogeys on Friday but still held on to the lead by two shots in the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba.

Mayakoba Championship 2021 R2

Having started the day with a two-shot lead at 10-under thanks to his opening 61 he produced four birdies and a bogey on the front nine to make the turn in 33. He was 5-under for the day by the 13th following two more birdies before finding the bunkers at the par-4s 16th and 18th leading to a 68 to reach 13-under.

"I had a couple bad breaks coming in. No. 16 just doesn't really set up well for me, not going to take driver there, and 3-wood kind of works away from the fairway. You know, like I said, it was a hard finish, but I was really happy with how I played today. Felt like it was pretty difficult this afternoon, honestly. Wind started to swirl a little bit and pick up.

"But yeah, I mean, I was really happy with how I started because, you know, following a round like I had yesterday, it's not always easy to come out and keep on making birdies and glad I proved to myself that I could do it. Yeah, I put myself in a really good spot, so I'm excited for the week."

Mayakoba Championship 2021 R2

Scottie Scheffler closed with a bogey-free 64 including a run of five birdies on his back nine from the 4th and lies in second place at 11-under.

"I just kept the ball in play. I gave myself a lot of looks today. I don't think I missed very many greens, so that's really important around this place, just keep it in position. I did a good job of that today.

"I would say I could hit a few more fairways. Other than that, I feel like I'm doing a good job of getting the ball in position and giving myself a lot of looks. I feel like I burned a lot of edges the first couple days. Once those putts start falling a bit more, I think I'll start scoring a bit better."

Mayakoba Championship 2021 R2

Mexico's Carlos Ortiz is tied in third place at 10-under alongside Norway's Viktor Hovland after closing with 65s.

Ortiz started on the back nine and shot two birdies and a bogey to make the turn at 1-under before making four consecutive birdies from the 2nd and one final birdie at the 9th.

"Actually, I don't mind being 1 under through 10 starting on the back nine. It was a tough stretch of the golf course and I knew if you can somehow keep it together, the front nine's pretty gettable. So I think I did a good job with that and I took advantage of the easy holes, and obviously finishing up with birdie was really nice.

"I feel like I did everything pretty decent. When I missed the green, I think I chipped it pretty close. Putted great most of the day. I made some good putts and I hit it close, so I'm really pleased the way I played. I think I'm in a pretty good position for the weekend."

Mayakoba Championship 2021 R2

Hovland shot eight birdies on Friday but was let down on his back nine by a bad bounce at the 1st that placed him out of bounds leading to a double bogey.

"I started on the back, so I was 3 under par going on my front nine, the back nine. Then I get to the first hole, hit it in the left rough and I didn't have very far in and I pushed it a little bit and literally landed four steps right of the pin, hits a sprinkler head and goes in the trees over the green. That was obviously, that's a bad break, but it's not like I sliced it OB or something like that. I knew I was playing good golf, so I just had to reset, and I was happy I made five birdies coming in."

A group of ten players are tied for fifth place at 9-under including Justin Thomas who followed up his opening 68 with a 65.
