Davis Thompson wins maiden title at TPC Deere Run

John Deere Classic R4

Davis Thompson, who finished runner-up last week, started the day with a two-shot lead at TPC Deere Run and fired seven birdies and a single bogey. He closed with a 64 to reach 28-under and win his first PGA Tour title by four-shots at the John Deere Classic at the age of 25 years, 1 month, 2 days.

“I played great all week,” said Thompson. “Kind of had a few hiccups on Friday, but worked hard after the round and was able to kick it into gear on the weekend.

“Just feels great. A lot of hard work went into this, and thankfully I was able to get the job done this weekend. My caddie kept me grounded all weekend. He did a great job. I’m just so thankful to be the champion.”

This win becomes Thompson’s third consecutive and fourth top-10 of the season following T2 at the Myrtle Beach Classic, T9 at the US Open and T2 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

“The goal I guess in May was to make the playoffs, and then next thing I know I finished second at Myrtle Beach and then ninth at the US Open and second last week.

“This week my goal was to just kick the door down and get a win honestly. Then I was just able to play really well and thankfully I’m in a good spot for the rest of the year.”

The American’s 256 total sets a new career-low 72-hole total (previously: 262/2023 American Express/2nd), a new lowest 72-hole tournament scoring record by one-stroke (previously: 257/Michael Kim/2018) and also records the lowest score in 72-hole event on the PGA Tour since Ludvig Åberg at the 2023 RSM Classic.

American Michael Thorbjornsen, in his third Tour start as a professional, finished second at 24-under after closing with a 63.

Thorbjornsen became a PGA Tour member after finishing No. 1 in PGA Tour University, the second player in history to earn membership via this route after Ludvig Åberg.

Making his third start and following a T10 at last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, amateur and sponsor exemption Luke Clanton becomes the first amateur to finish top-10 in back-to-back starts on Tour since Billy J. Patton (T8/1957 US Open, T8/1958 Masters). He recorded the best finish by an amateur at the John Deere Classic by closing with a bogey-free 63 and joining Thorbjornsen in second place at 24-under. Patrick Rodgers held the previous best finish, T15 in 2013.

Chinese Taipei’s C.T. Pan shot a 64 and also finished second earning his third career runner-up and first since the 2018 Wyndham Championship. He is still seeking his second Tour title in his 193rd start having won the 2019 RBC Heritage.

American Hayden Springer who opened with a 59 on Thursday closed with a 67 to finish T7 at 21-under, recording his third top-10 finish in 15 starts (T3/Puerto Rico Open, T10/Rocket Mortgage Classic, T7/John Deere Classic).

Davis Thompson and C.T. Pan as the two players not otherwise exempt in the top-10 and ties qualified for The 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon.

The John Deere Classic is one of five events in the 2024 PGA TOUR season that is part of the Open Qualifying Series (OQS). The remaining event is the Genesis Scottish Open (3, top 10).
