Uganda’s Afriyea Golf Academy has secured a spot as a finalist in the prestigious Golf Environment Awards 2025 under the International Golf category.

Founded with a unique mission, Afriyea Golf Academy goes beyond golf training to integrate sustainability deeply into its operations. As Uganda’s premier junior golf development programme, it not only teaches the sport but also aims to instil environmental responsibility in young people across communities and schools.

Afriyea’s approach is comprehensive: from waste management and tree planting to water conservation and monthly clean-ups around the River Mpanga — which serves over 1.2 million people — the academy is determined to make a lasting environmental impact.

First established in 1995, the Golf Environment Awards highlights golf clubs and organisations that are pushing to improve environmental standards at golf courses across the globe. The awards spotlight sustainable practices that inspire positive environmental change across the golf industry, helping to combat climate change and boost biodiversity worldwide.

STRI Group Director Richard Stuttard noted, “Going into our 30th year of the GEAs, we continue to be impressed by the dedication and commitment to protecting the environment. The standard of entries is high every year, and we are delighted to see new individuals and clubs at the awards each year.”

Alongside golf development, community projects such as waste management and local clean-ups play a big part in the academy’s mission.

For Afriyea, this recognition marks a milestone in its journey. Isaiah Mwesige, Chief Executive Officer of Afriyea Golf Academy, shared the academy’s vision, saying, “Golf has the power to change lives and shape the future. When paired with sustainability, it can transform the world. At Afriyea Golf Academy, we believe that the sport is more than just a game; it’s a platform for meaningful change, where every swing can contribute to a better, greener planet.”

Mwesige continues, highlighting the importance of this award: “Being named a finalist in the prestigious Golf Environment Awards is a testament to our commitment to this vision. Competing alongside some of the best golf clubs in the world is an honour, and we are proud to stand with others who share our passion for sustainability. This recognition isn’t just about what we’ve accomplished so far, but about the journey we continue to pursue — making a lasting impact on our courses, our communities, and the young golfers we nurture.”

The winners of the Golf Environment Awards will be revealed on 23 January 23, 2025, at the Crown Hotel in Harrogate, Yorkshire.
