Kevin Roy signed for a 10-under 62, his career-low 18-hole score on Tour in spite of a bogey at the 8th, to take the Puerto Rico Open lead before play was suspended.
“It was one of those rounds that just obviously everything was clicking,” said the American. “Hit a lot of fairways, lot of greens, hit quite a few wedges in there close and finally saw some putts go in, which is always nice. I struggled with the putter last week in Palm Beach and did some work with it early on in the week, kind of tweaked just a little bit of posture and saw some go in, so it was great.”
The American ties Jhonattan Vegas (R4/2020) for the lowest 18-hole score in Puerto Rico Open history. Should his lead hold, it would mark his first career lead/co-lead after any round on Tour in his 38th career start.
In five starts this season, Roy has two top-25 finishes (T18/The American Express, T17/Mexico Open at VidantaWorld). He currently sits No. 95 in the 2025 FedExCup standings.
“I’m feeling more and more comfortable out here,” said Roy. “I thought it was a really good start to the season. Looks like we played our way into The Players, which is pretty awesome. Yeah, a couple of the missed cuts that I had, I was right there, I gave myself a chance, which is great. I think it’s been a good start to the season.”
In 37 career starts on Tour, he has totaled six top-25 finishes and one top-10 (T8/2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship). He earned his 2025 PGA Tour membership by finishing No. 13 on the 2024 Korn Ferry Tour Points List.
In his 48th career start on Tour, American Chris Gotterup recorded a career-low 63 featuring an eagle at the par-5 14th and lies in second place at 9-under. His previous best of 64 came in the second round of the 2024 ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic, which he went on to win by six strokes.
Making his PGA Tour debut, Denmark’s Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen carded a bogey-free 64 including an eagle at the par-5 14th to take a share of third place at 8-under alongside American Davis Riley who also stayed bogey-free.
Neergaard-Petersen earned three victories on the HotelPlanner Tour last year to earn immediate promotion to the DP World Tour; in six starts on the DP World Tour this year, he has had three top-10 finishes, including one runner-up at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.
Defending champion Brice Garnett of the United States opened with a 70 and sits in T73.
Round one was suspended from 12:27 to 1:44 p.m. local time due to rain. Due to darkness, round one was suspended for the day at 6:32 p.m. with 18 players still needing to complete their rounds. Round one will resume Friday at 7 a.m., and round two will begin as originally scheduled at 6:45 a.m.
