Miyu Yamashita started the day with a one-shot lead at the AIG Women’s Open and made three birdies and one bogey to close with a 70 and win her first major title by two shots at 11-under.
“To win such a historic tournament in front of all these fans is such an incredible feeling, and to have my family around me is just amazing”, said Yamashita. “To be part of such a moment in history is something very, very special.
“This was a goal of mine from a very young age to win a major championship, and to be able to do that is very special. It’s been the result of hard work every single day, making changes, making improvements, and to be able to do it now and call myself a champion is incredible.
“To have so many Japanese players doing so well at the moment is something that keeps me going. For us all to support each other is something that I’m really looking forward to in the future as well.”
Yamashita is the third Japanese player to win the AIG Women’s Open following Ayako Okamoto (1984) and Hinako Shibuno (2019).
She has won thirteen times on the LPGA Tour of Japan since the beginning of 2021 and this is her first win away from her home tour.
England’s Charley Hull finished second at 9-under after closing with a 69 featuring five birdies and bogeys at the 16th and 17th. This is her second runner-up finish at the AIG Women’s Open in fourteen starts and second in three years (Walton Heath/2023). Hull has finished runner-up four times in LPGA Majors and in the top-10 ten times.
Japan’s Minami Katsu tied for second place with a final-round 69 having made four birdies and one bogey.
Compatriot Rio Takeda fired two birdies and one bogey for a 71 and finished in a share of fourth place at 7-under alongside Korean A Lim Kim whose 73 featured six bogeys.
Spain’s Paula Martin Sampedro finished in T8 at 4-under, the lowest finish by an amateur in the AIG Women’s Open since 2005 at Royal Birkdale. Martin Sampedro also completed the lowest round of the fourth round.
Stroke average for the fourth round was 74.93 with the cumulative figure for the four rounds sitting at 73.64. Royal Porthcawl played 2.75 strokes harder in the final round than in the third round.
