Justin Rose signed for a final-round 67 having made six birdies, four of them consecutively from the 14th, and three bogeys to reach 16-under and enter a playoff for the FedEx St. Jude Championship against American J.J. Spaun who fired six birdies and one bogey for a 65.
Both players parred the first extra hole and birdied the second before Rose birdied the 3rd for the win.
Rose led the field with 26 total birdies this week (next best: 23, Scottie Scheffler and Tommy Fleetwood).
“I’ll tell you what, it feels amazing to get it done. Today was obviously a great opportunity starting the day. There were a lot of, I guess for me, storylines involved, playing with Tommy, one of my best friends out here on Tour, clearly Scottie right there, a whole chasing pack,” said Rose.
“But starting the day one back, clearly that’s an opportunity to have an awesome chance at winning a tournament. It kind of wasn’t going my way. The front nine was slow for both me and Tommy so there were four of us in the mix heading into the back nine.
“I stalled a little bit, but then the last five holes, I played some of my best golf, and I kind of felt like I pulled it together when I really had to, and even in the playoff I continued to hit great shots, and that just makes it so much fun as a competitor to really, really, really, when you have to hit the shots, to find them. I’ll take a lot of pride in that today.”
This was the Englishman’s twelfth career PGA Tour title in his 443rd start at the age 45 and his first since the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He has had the most wins on Tour of any player from England since 1940 (second most: Nick Faldo, 9 wins).
Rose is the oldest winner on Tour since Phil Mickelson at the 2021 PGA Championship (50 years, 11 months, 7 days).
Spaun recorded his third runner-up finish of the season (P2/The Players Championship, T2/Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches) and is tied with Justin Thomas for the most by any player this year.
The 2025 US Open winner recorded his sixth top-10 finish in 21 starts this season.
American World No. 1 and FedExCup leader Scottie Scheffler made four birdies and two bogeys for a 67 and a share of third place at 15-under, recording his twelfth consecutive top-10 finish and 14th of the season.
England’s Tommy Fleetwood started the day with a one-shot lead and fired three birdies and two bogeys for a 69 and a share of third place. He recorded his sixth top-10 finish this season and the 43rd of his PGA Tour career in his 162nd start, the most of any player without a win since 1983.
American Cameron Young, winner of last week’s Wyndham Championship, carded the low round of the day with a 6-under 64 having made two bogeys and finished fifth at 11-under.
FedExCup Playoffs
Following the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the top 50 players in the FedExCup standings have qualified for next week’s BMW Championship (the second of three events in the FedExCup Playoffs).
