Patrick Reed started the day at the Qatar Masters with a two-shot lead and fired four birdies and two bogeys to close with a 2-under 70 and win by the same margin at 16-under.
“It wasn’t looking very good there on the front nine,” said Reed. “To lose the lead like that and then to be able to kind of flip the switch there on the back nine obviously felt amazing.
“I just needed a putt to go in. I mean, I had 18 putts on the front nine, yesterday I had 33 putts, so I felt like I was hitting the ball fine.
“I felt like right when we made the turn – you know, we were chasing at that point – I just decided to go for it and trust in the putter and trust in the process, and we were able to kind of get it done.
“I feel amazing. This one hasn’t fully sunk in yet but today, with how stressful the day was, I was very proud because it very easily could have gotten away from me.
“The golf we’ve played since basically the off-season has been some stellar golf, I feel really confident in my golf game right now, and it’s always awesome to come and play the way we do, especially over here.”
This is the American’s fifth DP World Tour title and his second win in the span of three weeks following the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.
“This little run I’ve had, two wins and a second, it’s awesome. We couldn’t ask anything more than what we did,” he added.
“It’s special, to come out here especially to get two wins early on in the season, and hopefully there’s a lot more to come.”
Scotland’s Calum Hill, who finished T2 alongside Reed at last week’s Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship, made a double bogey at the par-4 4th but recovered with an eagle at the par-5 10th and five birdies including four in a row from the 14th to card a 67 and finish second at 14-under.
“Golf feels good at the minute,” said Hill. “It was nice to have a really good week last week, I put myself in a really good position, didn’t manage to cross the line with the trophy but I feel like I did a lot of things well and if you put me in that position again I feel like I could convert from there.
“Today it was a different story, it was a big chase, you’re trying to get as much on the field as you can and then hopefully Patrick didn’t go too far away.”
Denmark’s Jacob Skov Olesen challenged Reed’s lead with an early birdie but made three bogeys and three more birdies to close with a 71 and finish T3 at 14-under alongside American Johannes Vermeer who made one bogey on the front nine and five birdies on the back nine for a 68.
Finland’s Oliver Lindell was another player who challenged Reed firing six birdies and two bogeys on the front nine to make the turn in 32. He added two more birdies on the back nine but also made two bogeys and a double bogey at the par-4 15th for a 70 and a share of fifth place at 12-under.
England’s Dan Bradbury made two bogeys and signed for a 69 and a share of fifth place alongside Spain’s Ángel Ayora who made three bogeys for a 71 and Sweden’s Sebastian Söderberg who made two bogeys for a 69,
