New Zealand’s Daniel Hillier made an eagle at the par-5 9th, six birdies and one bogey to close with a 7-under 65 and take a share of the lead at the Qatar Masters. He has finished in the top-6 four times in his past five starts.
“I was a little frustrated with a soft bogey there on [the 17th hole] but nice to get a couple back at the end,” said Hillier. “My game’s feeling really good so I’m just trying to ride the wave, I guess.”
American Patrick Reed, who has finished winner/T2 in the past two weeks, made two bogeys for his share of the lead.
“I hit the ball pretty well, especially early in the round, a lot of my birdies were just kind of kick-ins which is always nice, not having to think too much around there,” said Reed.
“The golf course, especially when it’s windy like this, it requires a lot of shot-making – you have to work the ball both ways, or flight things down, or take it up in the air. That’s the kind of golf I like.
“I like to get creative when I’m out there and a golf course like this with a lot of doglegs and cross-winds, it allows you to do that. It’s just one of these places that kind of suits my eye.”
Denmark’s Jacok Skov Olesen stayed bogey-free and is tied in third place at 6-under alongside Finland’s Oliver Lindell who eagled the par-4 4th and made two bogeys as did Italian Gregorio De Leo.
Also tied in third place are Sweden’s Marcus Kinhult who eagled the par-5 18th and made one bogey, and Ángel Ayora who also eagled the 18th and made three bogeys.
Ireland’s three-time Major Champion Pádraig Harrington made his 500th start on Tour at the Qatar Masters .
“It’s just a pure love for the game, I’m fascinated with it, I enjoy it, I love coaching, I love thinking about it. I think 20 years ago there was an element of anybody who played golf we pretended we weren’t golf nerds. I’m as biggest of golf nerd as you can get, I just like… pic.twitter.com/gouRuMV8tR
