Cameron Young fired a bogey-free, 8-under 64 to take the opening lead at the Cadillac Championship. He is tied for the most birdies (8) in round one and was perfect in Scrambling (8 of 8).
“I think most of the tee shots are pretty apparent,” said Young, “which is what good courses give you. I think it doesn’t try to hide anything. So learning the course wasn’t a huge deal, I wouldn’t say. Yeah, I drove it okay today, it should suit me really well and thankfully had a really good day around the greens. I made a couple from the fringe and putted really well.
“I think you can be pretty aggressive into a lot of the greens. They’re not particularly firm. There’s a couple spots where the rough’s a little longer and obviously there’s tons of water out there. So it’s more a matter of trying to avoid the big mistakes. When you’re in the fairway I think you can be pretty aggressive.
“I feel like I made a billion feet of putts, which I think works most places. It’s just one of those days that each mistake I made I was not penalized as much as I could have been. And every time my ball got near the hole it seemed to want to go in today. ”
64 is one-stroke shy of the American’s lowest opening-round score on the PGA Tour (63, most recent: 2025 Wyndham Championship).
He needed only 20 putts in round one, the fewest in a round in his Tour career (previous: 21; 2025 Tour Championship/R2, 2025 RBC Heritage/R2).
Young holds his fourth 18-hole lead/co-lead on Tour (most recent: 2022 Open Championship/finished 2nd) but is 0-for-3 to date.
He is making his ninth start of the season and has had four top-10 finishes: T7/The Genesis Invitational, T3/Arnold Palmer Invitational, Won/The Players Championship, T3/Masters Tournament.
Tied in second place at 7-under, 13-time PGA Tour winner Jordan Spieth made an eagle at the par-5 8th, seven birdies and two bogeys for a 65, his best round on Tour since the 2025 Wyndham Championship (65/R1). He is one of only 18 players in the field who have previously played a Tour event held at Trump National Doral (2014-2016).
Fellow American Alex Smalley fired eight birdies and one bogey to join Spieth at 7-under. He qualified this week by virtue of his position in the Aon Swing 5 (No. 4) after earning his third runner-up finish on Tour at last week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans (with partner Hayden Springer).
In fourth place at 6-under, Canada’s Nick Taylor posted a bogey-free 66, highlighted by a 62′ 2″ birdie putt on the par-3 15th hole, his fourth putt made over 60 feet in his Tour career (in regulation play).
In T27, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler of the USA was 3-under through five holes before making back-to-back bogeys at the 10th and 11th and finishing with a 1-under 71. The 20-time PGA Tour winner has 29 straight top-25 finishes (last finish outside the top 25: 2024 BMW Championship/T33).
Making his first start as a member, England’s Alex Fitzpatrick (T37/E) made five birdies and five bogeys. The 27-year-old earned his first Tour victory at last week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans (with brother and World No. 3 Matt Fitzpatrick) in his 11th start on Tour.
Following a 10-year hiatus, the PGA Tour returns to Miami and the City of Doral for the inaugural Cadillac Championship (the event does not carry the history of previous events contested at Doral); the Cadillac Championship will mark the 56th playing of a Tour event at the famed Blue Monster having previously hosted the Tour consecutively from 1962 to 2016.
