Virginia senior Ben James has earned PGA Tour membership through the end of the 2027 season after finishing No. 1 in the final 2025-26 PGA Tour University rankings. The result was confirmed after stroke play at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship concluded on June 1 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, making James eligible to debut as a PGA Tour member at the RBC Canadian Open beginning June 5.
James becomes just the fourth player to earn direct PGA Tour membership through PGA Tour University, joining Ludvig Åberg (2023), Michael Thorbjornsen (2024) and David Ford (2025). The program, launched to give leading college golfers a pathway into the professional ranks while encouraging them to complete their collegiate careers, requires players to compete at NCAA Division I level for a minimum of four years.
How James Clinched It
James finished T16 at the NCAA Championship, which was enough to hold off Christiaan Maas of Texas, who ended the week T19. Maas had mounted a strong spring challenge with five top-10 finishes and a victory, but James’ consistency across the full season proved decisive. Maas finished second in the final PGA Tour University standings.
The T16 was James’ worst result of his senior campaign, underlining the level he maintained throughout the year. He held the No. 1 position in the PGA Tour University ranking every week of his senior season, from the preseason release in July 2025 through to the final standings. That made him only the second player in the program’s history to go wire-to-wire at No. 1, matching a feat Florida State’s John Pak achieved in 2021.
“I had a really good fall my junior year, played great all junior year, and then it’s reality when you see your name on the rankings,” James said after securing the top spot. “I’m just really happy with how I handled it, because it’s difficult. It’s an amazing opportunity that PGA Tour U lets us college guys have, a pathway to the PGA Tour, and I’m looking forward to getting out there.”
A Record-Setting College Career
The Milford, Connecticut, native leaves Virginia with one of the strongest résumés in recent college golf history. He recorded seven victories and 35 top-10 finishes in 46 career starts. He is set to become just the fifth player in college golf history to earn first-team All-American honours in four consecutive seasons.
James also helped transform the Virginia program during his time with the Cavaliers. The team captured its first two ACC Championship titles in 2025 and 2026 and recorded a national runner-up finish at the 2025 NCAA Championship. Before earning his PGA Tour card, James had already gained experience at the professional level, having previously qualified for the U.S. Open as an amateur.
What the Rest of the Class Earned
PGA Tour University distributes playing opportunities across its affiliated tours based on final ranking position. The No. 1 finisher earns PGA Tour membership, while players ranked second through 10th, including Maas, receive full Korn Ferry Tour status. Those finishing between 11th and 25th secure PGA Tour Americas membership.
The tiered system has produced immediate results at the highest level. Åberg won twice on the PGA Tour within months of graduating from Texas Tech in 2023 and has since become one of the top-ranked players in the world. Thorbjornsen and Ford have also competed regularly on the PGA Tour since earning their cards.
James’ PGA Tour membership runs through the end of the 2027 season, giving him a full runway to establish himself. His first opportunity comes at the RBC Canadian Open, where he will tee it up as a professional for the first time just days after closing out his college career in Carlsbad.
