Davis Riley birdied the final two holes to shoot a bogey-free 63 and take a one-shot lead into Sunday’s final round of the Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club.
Riley holed a 54-foot birdie putt at the par-5 17th before converting from 10 feet at the 18th to finish 15-under. Michael Brennan, who had reached 15-under during a round of 64, bogeyed the last to fall one behind.
The lead gives Riley an opportunity to claim his third PGA Tour title and first since the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge. Victory would also move him into the FedExCup Playoffs after a difficult season that has included 10 missed cuts in 20 starts.
Riley began the week 146th in the FedExCup standings and is projected to rise to 61st with a win. The Rocket Classic and next week’s Wyndham Championship are the final two events before the top 70 advance to the Playoffs.
“There’s been a lot of ups and downs,” Riley said. “I’m just excited that I’ve started to put the things together and have a chance.”
Riley Finds Form With Putter and Irons
Riley hit 17 of 18 greens during his third round and has now completed 36 consecutive holes without a bogey. His 63 was one shot outside the career-low 62 he recorded at the 2022 Valspar Championship.
His 54-hole total of 195 also matched his career best in an individual stroke-play event. Riley ranks third in Strokes Gained: Putting for the week, gaining 6.671 shots on the field across the opening three rounds.
Sunday will bring his fourth career 54-hole lead or co-lead on Tour. He converted from the front at the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, finished second at the 2022 Valspar Championship and tied for sixth after leading this season’s Sony Open in Hawaii through three rounds.
Brennan remains his closest challenger after opening Saturday with four birdies in five holes. The 24-year-old made seven birdies before his only bogey at the 18th and will seek a second Tour victory in his 28th career start.
The former Wake Forest player won the 2025 Bank of Utah Championship as a sponsor exemption. He entered this week 106th in the FedExCup standings and has combined strong approach play with putting, ranking second and fourth in those categories respectively.
Four Players Sit Three Shots Back
Rasmus Højgaard, Chris Kirk, Rickie Fowler and Cameron Young share third place at 12-under, putting four players within three shots of the lead.
Højgaard produced Saturday’s lowest round, a bogey-free 61 that matched the Detroit Golf Club course record for the third consecutive day. The Dane made the cut on the number at 3-under before recording a new career-low score in his 183rd Tour round.
Kirk, runner-up here last year, shot 66. Fowler returned a 67 as he pursues a second Rocket Classic title following his victory in 2023, while Young posted 68 after beginning the day tied for the lead.
Xander Schauffele shot 67 and is four strokes behind Riley. Patrick Cantlay, another 36-hole co-leader, fell five back after a third-round 70 as his putting performance dropped from inside the top-15 over the first two rounds to 67th among 73 players on Saturday.
Riley will begin the final round with a one-shot lead.
