Tommy Fleetwood in four-way tie for lead

The Memorial Tournament R1

Tommy Fleetwood

Tommy Fleetwood carded a bogey-free, 5-under 67, to take a share of the lead at the Memorial Tournament. 67 is Fleetwood’s low score in 13 career rounds at Muirfield Village (previous: 69/R1/2024).

“I got the most out of the round, totally. I got away with a couple of poor misses. Hit the pin a couple of times when it was going past. But in general I played okay, I played fine. I just wasn’t a hundred percent by any means with my ball control from the fairway with my irons. But still shot 5-under, so it couldn’t have been that bad. I was just getting a little frustrated at the end not being able to execute the iron shots that I wanted to,” said Fleetwood.

“[The course] demands everything. I think it demands you to hit multiple different tee shots, different shapes, different shots. And then the same with approach play. I think the margins are so small and the misses are so small it just puts such a premium on your ball control, and then you don’t have to hit a terribly poor shot to be in a really tough spot. So I think it just demands from the start to the finish on every hole, which then is demanding mentally as well. So it’s just like one of those ultimate tests, I guess.”

The Englishman holds his ninth career 18-hole lead/co-lead in individual stroke-play events on the PGA Tour (most recent: 2026 Charles Schwab Challenge/finished T6). He is 1-for-8 converting to victory (2025 US Open).

Fleetwood has had two top-10 finishes in his last three starts on Tour (T6/Charles Schwab Challenge, T5/Truist Championship).

Wyndham Clark fired an eagle at the par-5 17th, five birdies and two bogeys for his 67,  his low score in 19 career rounds at the Muirfield Village Golf Club (previous: 68/R1/2022).

The American led the field in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green (6.067) and Strokes Gained: Approach the Green (4.621) in round one, his best career performance in a round in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green (previous: 3.626/2025 3M Open/R2).

“The golf course is so demanding,” said Clark. “I think I made three saves by chipping out and having a hundred yards in. Yeah, that’s what happens at this golf course. You hit it in the rough and you really can’t advance it, so you got to be patient and take your medicine and hope you get up-and-down from a hundred yards, and I did that a couple times. And then you start hitting some good shots and you make some putts and it turns into a good round.

“It’s funny because everyone says it’s kind of wide off the tee. It is and it isn’t. Some holes are and then some aren’t. For me, I feel really comfortable if I’m in the fairway with my iron play, and so for me if I can hit fairways, I think I’ll have success here. It’s — and that’s kind of the biggest thing for me.”

Today, every time I was in the fairway I gave myself a really good chance to make birdie and the times I didn’t hit the fairway I was trying to scramble for par.

This is Clark’s seventh career 18-hole lead/co-lead in individual stroke-play events on Tour (most recent: 2025 Arnold Palmer Invitational/finished T22) and he is 0-for-6 converting to victory.

In his first start since winning The CJ Cup Byron Nelson, he seeks to become the second player this season to win in back-to-back starts (Matt Fitzpatrick/RBC Heritage, Zurich Classic of New Orleans).

J.J. Spaun fired seven birdies and two bogeys for a share of the lead and his low score in 11 career rounds at Muirfield Village Golf Club (previous: 70/R3/2023).

He holds his ninth career 18-hole lead/co-lead in individual stroke-play events on Tour (most recent: 2026 Charles Schwab Challenge/finished T6) and he is 1-for-8 converting to victory (2025 US Open).

He has had two top-10 finishes in his last three starts on Tour  (T6/Charles Schwab Challenge, T5/Truist Championship).

Fellow American Ryan Gerard made an eagle at the par-5 7th followed by a double bogey at the par-3 8th as well as eight birdies and three bogeys to join the tie at the top of the leaderboard. He led the field in Strokes Gained: Putting (3.701) in round one.

He holds his third career 18-hole lead/co-lead on Tour (most recent: 2026 Charles Schwab Challenge/finished T10) and is 0-for-2 converting to
victory.

He has had three top-10 finishes in 2026 including two runner-up finishes (2nd/Sony Open in Hawaii, T2/The American Express).

Spaun and Gerard are the first players to hold the 18-hole lead/co-lead in back-to-back weeks on Tour since Keith Mitchell (2025 Valspar Championship, 2025 Texas Children’s Houston Open).

Canadian Nick Taylor rounds out the top-5 having made seven birdies, one bogey and a double bogey at the par-5 7th for a 68.

World No. 2 Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland made four birdies, one bogey and a double bogey at the par-4 3rd for a 71 and lies in T13 at 1-under.

Two-time Memorial Tournament defending champion and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler of the USA opened with a 73 featuring three birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey at the par-3 16th and lies in T33 at 1-over. This was his third over-par score in an opening round on Tour this season (73/WM Phoenix Open/finished T3; 74/The Genesis Invitational/finished T12).

He is aiming to become the first player to win an event on Tour in three consecutive years since Steve Stricker (2009-2011 John Deere Classic). Scheffler has had seven top-10 finishes in 11 starts this season, including one win at The American Express.
