J.T. Poston defeats Ryan Gerard in playoff

The Memorial Tournament R4

J.T. Poston of the United States plays his shot from the second tee during the final round of the the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday 2026 at Muirfield Village Golf Club

J.T. Poston and Ryan Gerard started the day tied together at the top of the Memorial Tournament leaderboard with thirteen holes still to play for round 3.

Poston completed round 3 with a 3-under 69 while Gerard carded an even par-72.

In round 4, Poston fired four birdies and four birdies for a 72 while Gerard made five birdies and one bogey for a 68 to both finish tied at the top at 12-under setting up a playoff.

Both parred the first extra hole but Gerard missed a 6-foot putt for par at the second while Poston secured his win with a par.

This was Poston’s fourth PGA Tour title in his 257th start at the age of 33 (2019 Wyndham Championship, 2022 John Deere Classic, 2024 Shriners Children’s Open, 2026 Memorial Tournament).

“Just incredibly proud, incredibly humbled. This is one of the events that we have circled on our calendar at the start of the year every year, and it just feels amazing to get it done, and just to be a part of the rich history here. We were talking about the past winners. It’s a good bunch, and to be able to add my name to that list is incredible,” said Poston.

“I’m not a quitter, so I hung in there and I just told myself — I mean, I hit a great putt on 13, right where I wanted and just didn’t fall. But I told myself on 14 tee — I was one back with five to go, still felt like I had a chance. I needed to play the last five holes really well. And I told myself I knew I was going to be shaking Mr. Nicklaus’s hand walking off 18 no matter what, and I want to be proud of the effort when I did. So just to do it the way that I did, birdieing three of the last five, is a dream come true and something I’ll certainly carry with me the rest of my career.”

Poston is the first player on record to win the Memorial Tournament when losing strokes off the tee. He finished 43rd in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee (-1.68). He is the third player this season to win when losing strokes off the tee (Akshay Bhatia/Arnold Palmer Invitational/-4.36, Brandt Snedeker/ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic/-0.52).

Poston also qualified for the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale as the highest finisher, not otherwise exempt.

Gerard collected his third runner-up finish of the season (2nd/Sony Open in Hawaii, T2/The American Express). He led the field in Strokes Gained: Putting (10.55) and took the outright lead with a birdie from 36 feet, 9 inches on the par-4 17th hole.

“Really good week of golf. Very difficult golf course. Hit a lot of really, really good shots over the course of 74 holes and however many of ’em were today,” said Gerard.

“So I feel good about where my game’s at. I feel confident in the way that I’m playing and how I handled myself out there. I know there were a lot of people kind of tied for the lead at one point coming down the stretch, and I felt like I stepped up and executed golf shots that I wanted to execute.

“Just stings a little bit because I felt like I hit a good — a couple good shots in the playoff that just — were on 18 in regulation in the playoff that just didn’t quite make it to the top of the hill. Again, just hit in the rough, and you can’t hit in the rough out here or you’ll get penalized for it.”

Wyndham Clark made six birdies and one bogey to post a final-round 67 and finish third at 11-under.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood made an eagle at the par-5 15th as well as three birdies and one bogey for a final-round 68 and a share of fourth place at 10-under alongside Sam Burns who made one bogey in his 69 for his best finish of the season and third top-10 (T6/AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, T7/Masters Tournament).

In his bid to become the first player to win an event on Tour in three consecutive years since Steve Stricker (2009-11 John Deere
Classic), two-time defending champion and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler made two birdies and one bogey for a 71 and T12 finish at 4-under, his 32nd consecutive top-25 finish on Tour.

Also tied in twelfth was Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy whose 68 featured six birdies and two bogeys.
