Seve Collection Launches Light-Blue Polos to Mark 50 Years Since Ballesteros’ First European Tour Win

A 19-year-old Severiano Ballesteros won the 1976 Dutch Open wearing light blue. Half a century later, the Seve Collection apparel brand has built a polo range around that colour to coincide with this year’s KLM Open.

Fifty years ago, a 19-year-old Severiano Ballesteros won the 1976 Dutch Open, beating nearest rival Howard Clark by eight strokes. It was the first of what would become a record 50 European Tour titles, now the DP World Tour, and the beginning of a career that included five major championships.

To mark the anniversary, Seve Collection, the official apparel brand inspired by Ballesteros, has highlighted a selection of light-blue polos from its newly launched polo range. The colour is drawn from archive imagery of Ballesteros during that breakthrough week in The Netherlands.

The 1976 Dutch Open

Ballesteros arrived in The Netherlands in the summer of 1976 as one of the game’s brightest young talents. Earlier that year, he had announced himself on the international stage with a strong showing at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. The Dutch Open victory followed weeks later and helped him win the European Tour Order of Merit that season.

Over the next two decades, Ballesteros became a three-time Open champion, a two-time Masters winner and the most successful player in European Tour history. His record of 50 victories on the Tour still stands.

Archive Colour, New Collection

Seve Collection says the light-blue palette references the colour Ballesteros wore during that 1976 week, linking the moment to the brand’s design approach. The collection draws on what the brand describes as “the confidence and understated elegance” that characterised both his game and his personal style.

“Seve’s career may be remembered through the trophies, but it all started with that first victory in Holland,” said Fredric Kaijser, co-founder of Seve Collection. “For us, this is exactly the kind of story Seve Collection was created to preserve, not only the great achievements, but the style, character and spirit behind them. Fifty years later, that sense of confidence and individuality remains just as relevant, both on and off the course.”

The polo range sits alongside other story-driven pieces in the collection, including knitwear inspired by Ballesteros’ 1984 Open Championship victory at St Andrews and tailored trousers modelled on those made by his personal tailor in his hometown of Pedreña.

The range is available at sevecollection.com.
