Jackson Koivun shot a 10-under 61 on Saturday to take a three-stroke lead into the final round of the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities.
The 21-year-old completed the back nine in a tournament-record 28, making four birdies and two eagles to reach 20-under. His 54-hole total of 193 tied the tournament scoring record set by Lee Hodges in 2023.
Emiliano Grillo and Ben Kohles each returned a 65 to share second at 17-under. Michael Brennan shot 63 and joined Chandler Phillips at 16-under, while Denny McCarthy, Billy Horschel and second-round leader Michael Kim sit another stroke behind.
Koivun pulls away on the back nine
Koivun began the third round four strokes behind Kim, whose second-round 59 had taken him to 14-under. After playing the front nine in t2-under, Koivun separated himself from the field during an 8-under closing stretch.
He converted a 12-foot eagle putt at the par-five 12th before adding four birdies across the next five holes. A 14-foot eagle putt at the par-five 18th completed his 28 and gave him his first lead after any round on the PGA Tour. Koivun made two eagles and six birdies without dropping a shot.
At 21, he is the youngest player to hold or share a 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour this season. A victory would make him the fourth rookie winner of the campaign, following Alex Fitzpatrick, Kristoffer Reitan and Stefano Mazzoli.
A rapid move from amateur golf
Koivun is making only his 13th PGA Tour start and his third as a professional. He missed the cut at the John Deere Classic in his professional debut, then finished tied for 10th at the ISCO Championship two weeks ago.
His final amateur round came at the 2026 US Open at Shinnecock Hills, where he shot 68 and shared low-amateur honours with Ryder Cowan. He finished tied for 23rd at 5-over.
The former world No. 1 amateur accepted PGA Tour membership through the PGA Tour University Accelerated programme. He became its third graduate after Gordon Sargent and Luke Clanton.
Koivun also led Auburn University to its second national championship in three years. He won six times in 13 collegiate starts during the season and became the first player to claim the Haskins, Hogan and Nicklaus awards twice.
Grillo and Kohles share second
Grillo is seeking his third PGA Tour victory and has a strong record at the 3M Open, with three top-10 finishes in six previous appearances. Kohles, the first-round leader, is chasing his first title in his 122nd Tour start.
Brennan’s 63 was his lowest score in 88 PGA Tour rounds. He entered the week 105th in the FedExCup standings with three events remaining before the playoffs.
Kim followed his 59 with a one-under 70, leaving him five strokes off the lead. McCarthy, also at 15-under, is searching for his first victory in his 232nd start.
Scheffler remains six shots back
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler shot 64 to reach 14-under alongside Davis Thompson, Seamus Power and Brian Harman. Scheffler played the back nine in 29 and made an eagle at the 296-yard 16th, holing out from rough 55 feet beyond the green.
Scheffler has never won from more than five strokes behind after 54 holes. Koivun leads him by six and will try to convert a position that has produced four winners in the tournament’s first seven editions.
