Cameron Young tied the Detroit Golf Club record with a bogey-free 61 on Friday, reaching 10-under and joining Patrick Cantlay and Patrick Fishburn atop the Rocket Classic leaderboard after 36 holes.

Young birdied seven of his first eight holes and began considering a run at Jim Furyk’s PGA Tour record of 58. Asked what number was on his mind during the early surge, Young said, “I was thinking 55.”

The world No. 3 made only two more birdies over his closing 10 holes. His 9-under round matched the tournament course record set by Jake Knapp in 2025 and equalled by first-round leader Peter Malnati on Thursday.

“You hate to call it a disappointing 61,” Young said after missing several opportunities to challenge Furyk’s record, which has stood since 2016. “It felt like I had a 10-footer for birdie on pretty much every hole.”

The round was the second-lowest of Young’s PGA Tour career, behind the 59 he shot during the third round of the 2024 Travelers Championship. He now has 21 consecutive made cuts and will carry a share of the lead into the weekend for the fourth time in his career.

Young has converted two of his previous three 36-hole leads or co-leads into victories, winning the 2025 Wyndham Championship and the 2026 Cadillac Championship. He also won The Players Championship this season.

Cantlay and Fishburn set the weekend pace

Cantlay and Fishburn each shot 66 to match Young at 10-under. Cantlay, an eight-time PGA Tour winner, is seeking his first title since the 2022 BMW Championship. He has held or shared a 36-hole lead nine previous times in individual stroke-play events, converting once.

Fishburn is chasing his first PGA Tour victory in his 74th start. His best results remain two solo-third finishes from 2024, while his previous 36-hole leads ended with finishes of tied eighth and tied sixth.

Matt Wallace shot 64 and Rickie Fowler returned a 68 to sit one stroke behind the leaders. Fowler briefly moved to 11-under before three back-nine bogeys, including a three-putt at the 11th and another dropped shot after finding thigh-high fescue at the 13th.

“Nice to finish with birdie on 18,” said Fowler, the 2023 Rocket Classic champion. “A lot of good stuff today and nice to be in a good spot for the weekend.”

Malnati followed his opening 61 with a 71, leaving him two strokes back alongside Xander Schauffele and Ryan Gerard. Schauffele carded a 66 on his Rocket Classic debut, while Gerard leads the field in Strokes Gained: Putting.

Matsuyama extends his cuts streak

Hideki Matsuyama shot 68 to reach 5-under and make his 30th consecutive PGA Tour cut, the longest active streak. Tony Finau joined him after a 67 as the 2022 champion tries to improve from 87th in the FedEx Cup standings before the Wyndham Championship.

Matt Kuchar made his seventh PGA Tour hole-in-one with a 9-iron at the 156-yard fifth. He invited a young spectator inside the ropes to collect the ball, then signed it for him.

US Open champion Wyndham Clark missed the 3-under cut after shooting 74 to finish five over. Chris Gotterup ended a run of 14 consecutive made cuts at one over, while Akshay Bhatia finished 1-under.

Ryu recovered from a difficult start to reach seven under at Royal Lytham, with Shiho Kuwaki one behind and Jeeno Thitikul and Yealimi Noh sharing third place.
