Félix Mory carded a course-record 65, equalling his lowest DP World Tour round, to lead the Danish Golf Championship by one shot after Thursday’s opening round.
The Frenchman reached 7-under par at Great Northern, with Danish favourite Lucas Bjerregaard and South Africa’s Brandon Stone tied for second place. Filippo Celli, Francesco Laporta, Wenyi Ding, Oliver Lindell and Freddy Schott were another shot back.
Great Northern is staging its first DP World Tour event. The Nicklaus Design course opened in 2017 and has seven lakes alongside elevation changes of up to 40 metres. Water can influence nine holes, including the island-green par-three 18th being used for the tournament.
Mory recovers with late eagle
Mory’s iron play produced short birdie chances at the first and third holes. Another accurate approach set up birdie at the sixth, while he also drove the short par-4 fourth and holed a long putt at the ninth to turn in 31.
A bunker save at the 11th moved him to 6-under, but consecutive bogeys at the 13th and 14th stalled him. Mory responded at the short 16th and then struck his second shot to nine feet at the par-5 17th, converting the eagle putt to take the outright lead.
The 31-year-old is making his 22nd DP World Tour appearance after graduating from the HotelPlanner Tour. He had missed 12 of 16 cuts this season but arrived in Denmark having played the weekend in three of his previous five starts.
“I didn’t think it was going to take me so much to adapt to this new tour because I’d played a few years on HotelPlanner Tour and I didn’t think it was going to be so different,” Mory said after his round.
Mory said changes involving his caddie and equipment had contributed to his difficult start, but he now felt more settled at this level.
Bjerregaard finds early momentum
Starting from the tenth, Bjerregaard made birdie at the 11th and struck precise approaches at the 12th and 13th. Another close iron shot brought a birdie at the 16th before he holed from six feet for eagle at the par-5 17th.
A three-putt bogey followed at the 18th, but Bjerregaard recovered with birdies at the first and fourth. He missed opportunities from inside six feet at the fifth and seventh, then bogeyed the eighth to complete a 66.
The two-time DP World Tour winner is competing with limited status. He also challenged at his national championship in 2024, when he took the lead on home soil before finishing tied second.
Stone closes with an eagle
Stone joined Bjerregaard on 6-under after birdies at the 15th and 16th followed by an eagle at the 17th. Ding’s 67 was bogey-free, while Celli also eagled the 17th.
Bubba Watson and Bernd Wiesberger were among eight players on 4-under. David Horsey, who won the Danish title in 2015, also opened with a 68.
