Yuto Katsuragawa Equals Course Record to Lead in Korea

The Japanese arrived 106th in the Race to Dubai with his DP World Tour card at risk.

Ivan Cantero leading Genesis Championship
  • Yuto Katsuragawa shot a bogey-free 63 to lead the Genesis Championship.
  • His round equalled the Woo Jeong Hills course record set by Jinam Kang in 2006.
  • Casey Jarvis is second, with Antoine Rozner, Si Woo Kim and Sanghun Shin one behind.

Yuto Katsuragawa came to Cheonan fighting for his job. He leaves Saturday two shots clear in the Genesis Championship after a flawless 8-under 63 that tied the course record at Woo Jeong Hills Country Club.

The Japanese started the week 106th in the Race to Dubai. Only the top 100 are guaranteed to keep their DP World Tour cards for 2027, and this is the final event of the regular season. He began the third round five shots behind halfway leaders Casey Jarvis and Antoine Rozner.

His 63 matched the 8-under round Jinam Kang set at the Perry Dye-designed par 71 in 2006. Katsuragawa made eight birdies and no bogeys.

“It’s been a long time since I had this good feeling so it was a great round,” Katsuragawa said. “After the Irish Open, I met a new putting coach and he was very helpful to get me in good form like this today.

“I’ve been outside of the 100 [on the Race to Dubai Rankings delivered by DP World], but I’ve been aiming up and now I can look up to victory, and go all the way to play my golf.”

How did Katsuragawa take control?

For most of the afternoon it looked like Jarvis’s tournament. The South African birdied the 2nd to reach 11-under. Katsuragawa answered with four birdies in a row from the same hole to move within two.

Jarvis birdied the 5th to stretch his lead to three again. Katsuragawa picked up another shot at the 8th, but Jarvis birdied the 9th to reach 13-under and stay well clear.

Katsuragawa birdied the 14th and 15th, while Jarvis hit his tee shot out of bounds at the 12th. He did well to save bogey, but that still dropped him back to 12-under alongside Katsuragawa. Another dropped shot at the 13th gave the Japanese the outright lead.

Katsuragawa then hit an excellent approach into the par-5 18th that left him three feet for birdie. He holed it to post 13-under in the clubhouse.

Jarvis parred his way in. His chip for eagle at the last hit the hole and stayed out, and he signed for 11-under.

What is at stake for Jarvis and Rozner?

Jarvis led by one after an opening 65 and was bogey-free in his second round. Like Katsuragawa, he has credited a new putting coach this week. The 23-year-old has already won twice this season, at the Magical Kenya Open and a week later at the Investec South African Open Championship. A third title on Sunday would lift him to second in the Race to Dubai going into the Play-Offs.

Rozner’s target is different. The Frenchman started the week 77th, and only the top 70 after Cheonan advance to the Play-Offs in Abu Dhabi. Bogeys at the 2nd and 3rd set him back on Saturday. Birdies at the 15th and 18th recovered some ground, and he finished on 10-under, three behind.

Who is chasing?

Rozner is tied third with two Koreans. Si Woo Kim reached double figures with his fourth birdie of the day at the 12th. Sanghun Shin, the Korean Tour Order of Merit leader, was alone in second after the first round.

One shot further back on 9-under are Spain’s Jorge Campillo, France’s Martin Couvra and Open Champion Ryan Fox.
