Yuto Katsuragawa Wins in Korea From 106th in the Race to Dubai

He came to Cheonan outside the card line and leaves with his second DP World Tour title and a ticket to both Play-Off events.

Genesis Scottish Open
  • Yuto Katsuragawa won the Genesis Championship on 13-under, two shots clear of the field.
  • France’s Frederic Lacroix and Martin Couvra shared second place on 11-under.
  • Katsuragawa started the week 106th in the Race to Dubai and has sealed his place in both Play-Off events.

Yuto Katsuragawa arrived at Woo Jeong Hills Country Club in Cheonan needing a big week just to keep his DP World Tour card. He leaves with his second title on the circuit, a two-shot win at the Genesis Championship and a place in both events of the Play-Offs.

The Japanese began the final regular-season event 106th in the Race to Dubai Rankings, with only the top 100 after Cheonan keeping their playing rights for next season. His week turned on Saturday, when a bogey-free 63 equalled the course record and gave him a two-shot lead.

Sunday was much quieter. Katsuragawa made one birdie, at the 4th, then 16 pars and a bogey at the last for a 13-under total. Nobody behind him could get close enough to make it count.

It is his first victory in more than two years.

“After the first win, I had such a hard time, struggling with that time, but having the second win, this is definitely the greatest moment of my life,” Katsuragawa said.

“Yes I was nervous, not just for the victory but also about the seed for the DP World Tour so it was double nervous for me but I think I got through.

“I had a good image from the first victory, I just kept that good feeling about it and I came for the second win.

“I’m very happy because to play on the DP World Tour is something I need in my life and I am very happy to play in Dubai.”

On Saturday he had credited a new putting coach, whom he met after the Irish Open, for the form that produced the 63.

How did Katsuragawa close it out?

The final group parred the first two holes. Katsuragawa’s tee shot at the 3rd went astray, but he got a free drop and hit a superb approach to save par.

At the 4th he holed from 27 feet for birdie to reach 14-under and lead by three. That was his last birdie of the day.

He could not take advantage of the par-five 5th. His playing partner Casey Jarvis did, and the South African’s birdie there cut the gap to two. Jarvis birdied the 8th to get within one, then ran into trouble at the 9th and fell back to 11-under, three behind.

Jarvis had led after the first round and shared the halfway lead with Antoine Rozner. A third title of his breakout season, after the Magical Kenya Open and the Investec South African Open Championship, would have lifted him to second in the Race to Dubai.

Rozner was next to push. The Frenchman’s second birdie of the day, at the 12th, put him alone in second, two behind. At the 13th he found the water and made a double bogey, and Katsuragawa’s lead was back to three.

Katsuragawa kept making pars. He came within a roll of a birdie at the 15th, while the players behind him kept dropping back. Couvra became his closest challenger at 11-under.

The 18th was the hardest hole of his day. Katsuragawa was out of position with both his tee shot and his third, and he was left with three putts for the title. He tapped in his second for a bogey and the win.

Who else booked a Play-Off place?

Lacroix holed his fifth birdie of the day at the last to join Couvra on 11-under. Couvra parred the 18th, and the shared second place sends both Frenchmen to Abu Dhabi.

Only the top 70 in the Race to Dubai after this week advance to the Play-Offs. They begin with the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship at Yas Links from 5–8 November. The top 50 after that go on to the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates from 12–15 November.
