The Walker Cup grew out of Rules meetings in 1920 between the USGA and the R&A, during which an international team competition was also discussed. USGA President George Herbert Walker (great-grandfather and grandfather of the 41st and 43rd US Presidents) drew up a plan and offered to donate a trophy, which became known as the Walker Cup.
The first Match in 1922 was won by the US 8-4, and although the US now lead 33 to 7 with one tie over 41 playings, the ten Matches to 2007 have been closer, shared five apiece.
