WGC – Workday Championship R3

Collin Morikawa takes 2-shot lead

February 25-28
The Concession Golf Club, Bradenton, Florida
$10,500,000
Round 1, Round 2, Round 4

Collin Morikawa started his round one shot behind the lead at 10-under and made the turn in 31 after six birdies and a single bogey at the par-3 4th. He fired two more birdies at the 11th and 12th to increase his lead to five shots and reach 15-under 201.

He ran into trouble at the 13th when his approach from the rough found the bunker, his next shot landed within 25 feet for a birdie attempt but his putt came up six feet short and he missed his par putt to finish with a bogey.

“I never got it going again,” said Morikawa, who parred the rest of his holes except the 17th where exiting a bunker and avoiding the water led to another bogey to close with a 67 and a two shot lead.

“I didn’t play great the last six, but a lot to learn from heading into tomorrow. Just to kind of clear my head to get ready for the 18-hole grind tomorrow.”

Should Morikawa win his fourth PGA title on Sunday he would join the list of twenty three players who have won both majors and World Golf Championships.

Overnight leader Brooks Koepka, who woke up unable to turn his neck properly, started his round with a pair of bogeys, birdied the third then parred all the way to the turn and came back with three more birdies for a 70 to tie for second place.

“It’s actually quite painful, because it’s on the left and right, then my traps are tight and shoulders and scaps. It just goes down the chain,” he said. “It’s kind of like a knife going into your left side of my neck. I couldn’t extend today for whatever reason.”

Koepka has been dealing with neck problems since the beginning of the year and is taking pain medication to get him through the weekend.

“Today was probably one of the worst days,” he said. “I’ve tried everything – sleeping different, I’ve been worked on. I don’t wish it upon anybody; it’s not fun. This is the first time I’ve ever had a stiff neck, but it sucks.”

Rory McIlroy double-bogeyed the par-4 2nd and bogeyed the 11th, but seven birdies and an eagle at the par-5 13th for a 66 left him in a tie for 8th at 11-under alongside Patrick Reed.

“It seems like it’s one of these courses where it can give up a lot of birdies and some eagles and stuff, but it can bite you very quickly without really doing much wrong,” said McIlroy. “Yeah, it’s one of these places where you just have to stay patient and know that you’re going to have chances.”

“It’s definitely a course that no lead is big enough to kind of be safe because anything can happen,” said Reed.
