Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit added a second round 69 to her first round 66 to stay atop the leader board, taking a one shot lead into the weekend of the 2021 ANA Inspiration. Despite only turning pro in 2019, this is her fourth time playing in the ANA Inspiration with the tournament’s tradition of inviting leading amateurs to play leaving her well prepared for this special 50th edition.
ANA Inspiration 2021 R2
“I had an opportunity to play here when I was 17, I think, and then got invited again when I was in college through Golf Week, Golf Stat, you know, UCLA ranking. Those rounds honestly gave me a lot of good experiences. And, you know, like you need those kind of rounds and you need those kind of struggles. I played three majors one year and that was really tough. So you learn from that, you know, like you have to act like a grown up on the golf course and you learn how to manage yourself out here.”
Looking ahead to the weekend, and sitting only one shot clear of a chasing pack which includes eight Major champions at five under or better, Tavatanakit’s plan is simple, “Just keep doing what I’m doing, focusing on what’s important, what I can control out there. There is going to be a lot of challenges on the weekend and I’m ready to face it. It’s not going to be easy. If I am going to win it it’s going to be tough.”

Shanshan Feng, playing only her second competitive round, since November 2019, continued her good form with six birdies and is in solo second place. Refreshed from her break from the Tour she explained, “You know what? My plan was to come back and enjoy the whole time that I’m on the course, and now I have two more days that I can enjoy with my team, my boss, and also my playing partners in the group. So I’m very happy about that. Result-wise it doesn’t really matter because I’m very happy about what I’m doing as the first tournament coming back.”
In what will be an exciting weekend for Thai golf, Moriya Jutanugarn lies in third place at 7 under, as she seeks to join her sister Ariya as a Major winner, she will look to remain in her own world out on the course, explaining, “Most of the time I only focus on like what I’m going to do or just trying to enjoy myself and entertaining myself out there. You know, like trying to have fun.”
ANA Inspiration 2021 R2
Charley Hull, who finished with a birdie for the second day running and a second 69, tied fourth at six under alongside Major champion Anna Nordqvist. Hull explains why playing at Rancho Mirage seems to bring out the best in her game, “I just really like it. I have great memories here. I first played in this event I think when I was 15 years old and my dad — as an amateur and my dad was here with me. I just really love it. I just like it because it’s a quite tight golf course and the rough can be thick and the greens are firm. I feel like that suits my game because I hit the ball quite high and I’m able to stop it where others find it quite hard.”
Hull, who played with a heavily strapped ankle explained, “Beware the injured golfer they say. I literally went for a 5k run, fell over a pot hole and banged my chin. I was more embarrassed at the time. It didn’t really hurt. Carried on with my 5k, played 18 holes at the Kia, and wasn’t until after, until I sat down for an hour and I stood up and couldn’t walk on it. So I rang my friend Jason who used to work for me as a physio. He told me to ice it and I listened to him and it worked a lot, then the guys here have been strapping it up for me. Feels loads better now.”
A strong finish from @HullCharley 💪
