Kristoffer Broberg set a new course record at Bernardus Golf and takes an 8-shot lead into the final day of the Dutch Open.

“I have been struggling all year with my game and my putting, you know I was looking at the stats and I was working hard on the putting. Saw an optician in Sweden and put a contact lens in the right eye so that was key, and now I can see the lines but in the beginning I played some really good golf. Key shots into one, two, three and a really good shot on four.”

The Swede produced four birdies and an eagle in his first six holes to increase his lead to five. He bogeyed the 9th and managed to save par at the 10th before making six more birdies in the next seven holes.

“It was a great day. I played solid in the beginning, then I was struggling a little bit from seven to ten, but it was pretty good in the end and the putter is just smoking hot. It is just rolling pure, and I see every single line, so golf is easy when it is like that.”

He needed an eagle at the final hole to finish with a 59 but settled for par to close his round 11-under for the day, 23-under overall.

“No, I wasn’t thinking 59 because I don’t like that tee shot and I’ve had a problem all year with my setup, I don’t feel a lot of confidence over the ball with the driver or the woods, so I just aimed left .

“I am just going to take one shot at a time, and I’ll watch the leaderboard to see what the guys do but just play my own game. Keep it simple.”

Dane Marcus Helligkilde closed in solo second place at 15-under after firing seven birdies and three bogeys for a 68.

“It’s nice being up there with all the crowds, I love playing with the big crowds to be honest. It is my first tournament with all the people watching and I just enjoyed today and I do not know why but I felt so comfortable, and it felt like home in some way just being out there and I played some pretty decent golf.

“I have been in many of the last balls out on the weekend and this is one of the tournaments where I have been the least nervous, and I don’t get why but I love being out there. I know I can compete here, but I just have to enjoy it and I really did.”

England’s Richard Mansell and Spain’s Alejandro Cañizares both shot 67s to take a share of third place at 14-under alongside Germany’s Matthias Schmid whose bogey-free round featured five birdies and an eagle at the par-5 12th for a 65.

“I hit it absolutely beautifully today. Good off the tee, the irons were on fire today, and I could have made a couple more putts but I am happy with the score,” said Schmid.

“It is crazy how a golf course can change on this type of grass with just a little bit of wind change. I like this wind even better, I think it suits me a bit better so it worked out well.

“I don’t have status, so I need to make birdies and make something happen, so I won’t change my mindset. I want to go out there and make some birdies tomorrow.”

Thomas Detry of Belgium lies in sixth place at 13-under having double-bogeyed the 7th and 9th to close with a 70.
