Overnight leader Cameron Smith of Australia started awkwardly with back-to-back bogeys but soon recovered with an eagle at the par-5 5th and three birdies to make the turn in 33. He made six more birdies on the back nine to close with a 64 and takes a three shot lead into the weekend.

“A few bad shots there the first couple of holes. I didn’t really feel that comfortable on the range this morning […] and it kind of showed those first couple. Yeah, figured it out by the 4th or 5th and was able to get on a bit of a roll with the putter as well.
“It was definitely frustrating, but kept the head on, and I knew there was plenty of birdies out there seeing everyone go low.”

Spain’s Jon Rahm and American Daniel Berger both stayed bogey-free and shot a second 66 to hold on to their second place while Patrick Cantlay moved down into solo fourth after signing for a bogey-free 67.
“I feel like the greens were a little bit slower today,” said Rahm. “Me and Patrick talked about it a little bit. It could have just been us, but it felt like they were a little bit slower and I just felt like I left a lot of putts out there on line that with the right speed might have had a chance of going in. But either way, still a solid round of golf.
