Back-to-back bogeys on the first holes of the back nine set hime back before recovering with a 12-foot eagle putt at the par-5 13th and one more birdie at the 15th to close with a 5-under 67 and a one-shot lead.

“I don’t want to think about overachieving anything at this moment. I still have a lot of days of play and there are a lot of talented players out here at the Masters.”

“I think with the rain passing by, the greens are going to get firmer, the fairways are going to get firmer, so I just have to be prepared to do the same thing I did today.”

Im’s score was the highest score to lead after the first round at the Masters since 2014 after two inches of rain softened the course followed by strong wind.

Australian Cameron Smith, playing for the first time since he won the Players Championship a month ago lies in second place after firing eight birdies unfortunately capped by double bogeys at the par-4s 1st and 18th for a 68.

“To be honest, those couple of double bogeys really didn’t have too bad a shot in them. It’s not like I was scratching it out of the trees,” said Smith. “Just misjudged the wind on both wedges. Just left myself in a bit of a tough spot. Other than that, it was just really solid.”

2020 champion Dustin Johnson fired a 69 for a share of third place at 3-under. Tied alongside him are fellow American and new Wolrd number 1 Scottie Scheffler as well as Chilean Joaquin Niemann and Englishman Danny Willett who won in 2016.
