Rafa Cabrera Bello won the playoff against fellow Spaniard Adri Arnaus to win his first European Tour title since the Scottish Open four years ago, bringing his total to four.

“I’m very, very happy. I knew it was going to be a really hard battle today and I don’t think I need to say that I didn’t get off to the ideal start.”

He started the day with a two-shot lead but lost it immediately with a double bogey at the par-4 first hole. Cabrera Bello birdied the fourth to make the turn in 37, two behind leader Arnaus, then produced three consecutive birdies in the back nine to close with a 69 to reach 19-under.

Arnaus made two eagles, two birdies and two bogeys to close with a 67 and enter the playoff.

Both players made similar tee shots to the left on the 18th but Cabrera Bello’s lie was better and he birdied for the win.

Cabrera Bello has now won the event at every age level completing the set of Spanish national championships.

“I’ve been believing in myself,” he said, “I’ve had amazing support all this week rooting for me ever since the first minute and I was just hanging in there, I knew I’d have an opportunity and I’m glad that luck swung my way.

“I came here in a pretty bad place with scores being not what I expect them to be and to be able to get momentum and turn it around and to walk out of here with a win means a lot to me. Hopefully I can keep going and get back to the player I know I can be.”

Scotsman Grant Forrest signed for a 65 and a share of third place alongside India’s Shubhankar (66) Sharma and France’s Julien Guerrier (69).
