Carnoustie Golf Links, Carnoustie, Scotland

American Olympic gold medalist Nelly Korda carded eight birdies and three bogeys to sign for a 67 and a share of the lead at 5-under ahead of a crowded leaderboard in the AIG Women's Open at Carnoustie.

“I cut it a little close on 17 today, I was really close to that water, so I didn't really have much. I just had a 6-iron in. I don't know the exact yardage, but I hit it really well,” said Korda. “The last hole, I was between an 8- and a 7-iron into the wind, and I just told myself, since I was hitting it well, to stay aggressive, and I hit a little pin shot in to 8 feet.”

She shares the lead with reigning champion Sei Young Kim of Korea and Sweden's Madelene Sagstrom.

Sagstrom has only once before in her career on the LPGA had the lead or co-lead after the first round and bested her previous best score of 69 at Carnoustie by two strokes.

“I putted really, really well. I think that was kind of what saved me. I made some really long putts today, and I knew that, if I could just get on the green, I have a chance for birdie or a chance to save my par.”

Sagstrom has not yet clinched a place on the European Solheim Cup Team and is hoping to showcase her game this week. She has made one appearance for Team Europe (2017), with a 1-2-0 record.

Women’s Open 2021 R1

“I put a little bit more pressure on myself both in '17 and '19, really wanting to make that team, and I'm kind of at a state where I'm like, if I'm good enough, I will make that team. If my game is wanted, I will be on that team, and if not, I'm just going to keep practicing and keep trying to make the next team or just keep finishing off this year strong.”

They are followed by four players in a tie for fourth at 4-under: 2021 U.S. Women's Open champion Yuka Saso, 2018 AIG Women's Open winner Georgia Hall, 2020/21 LPGA Tour rookie Andrea Lee and 21-year-old Scottish amateur Louise Duncan.

Solheim Cup veterans Carlota Ciganda, Lizette Salas and Lexi Thompson are tied for eighth at 3-under.
