Tyrrell Hatton, twice a past champion and who started the day in a four-way tie, took the solo lead at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship by one shot.

Hatton made the best of the windy conditions and produced five birdies and three bogeys at Kingsbarns to sign for a 70.

"I'm happy with how I scored. It was really tough out there. It was quite easy to make mistakes, very easy to hit bad shots.

"I guess I was fortunate at times where when I did hit a bad shot, I didn't end up in too much of a dodgy position. I was able to get it on to the green.

"If you do get it on the green, you then are in for a two putt to be honest, anything outside 20 feet, you just want to roll it up close and get out and get to the next hole."

Fellow Englishman Daniel Gavins lies in second place at 9-under after firing three birdies, a bogey and an eagle at the par-5 14th at Carnoustie for a 68.

Gavins won for the first time in August at the ISPS HANDA World Invitational presented by Modest! Golf Management but hasn't made the top-35 since.

Danny Willett, also of England, shot an eagle at the par-4 3rd, four birdies, a bogey and a double bogey at the par-4 6th at Carnoustie for a 69 and a share of third place at 8-under.

Tied alongside him is China's Haotong Li who started the day with a share of the lead but signed for a 72 after four birdies and four bogeys at the Old Course on Friday, making the cut for the first time this season.

Englishman Tommy Fleetwood who has finished second twice in this event, fired five birdies and four bogeys at Kingsbarns for a 71 and moved into a share of fifth place at 7-under alongside Denmark's Jeff Winther who also shot a 71 at Kingsbarns.
