Englishman Danny Willett gave himself an eighth European Tour win as a 34th birthday present at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on Sunday.

Willett is the first player since Ernie Else at the 2004 HSBC World Match Play Championship to win a European Tour title on his birthday.

"It's magical. On British soil with everyone here, it's been a great week."

He produced four birdies and a single bogey over the first ten holes to close with a 68 for an 18-under, 270 total and a two-shot victory at St. Andrews.

His victory was all the sweeter as he had so far this year battled a bout of Covid-19, wisdom teeth problems, appendicitis and a hernia and hadn't broken into the top-10 in eleven starts.

"It's been a couple of years of average stuff again. I seem to do this a lot actually, go up and down.

"We've been working hard, people don't see it behind the scenes. Obviously my wife does and other people do but it's a good one."

Fellow Englishman Tyrrell Hatton, who led after the first and second rounds, closed with a bogey-free 67 to finish second at 16-under alongside Joakim Lagergren of Sweden who signed for a 66.

England's Richard Bland and Ireland's Shane Lowry both closed with a 68 to tie for fourth place at 15-under.


Michael Hoey and Maeve Danaher won the team section this year finishing at 36-under with Danaher becoming the first woman to win the event.

Ryan Fox and Shane Warne also closed at 36-under but Hoey's individual score of 8-under was the deciding factor.
