Arnold Palmer Invitational R4

Bryson DeChambeau wins at Bay Hill

March 04-07
Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Orlando, Florida
$9,300,000
Round 1, Round 2, Round 3

Bryson DeChambeau battled to the end on Sunday and parred the final hole for a 71 to finish at 11-under 277 and win the Arnold Palmer Invitational by one shot.

He followed Palmer’s motto to play boldly and was motivated by a text conversation with Tiger Woods before his round.

“Well, it was obviously personal, I would say, for the most part, but pretty much to sum it up… he texted me this morning out of the blue and I wasn’t expecting anything. When I got that text, I’m like, ‘Wow, that’s pretty amazing that he is thinking of me when he’s in his tough times that he’s going through right now.’ So I just texted him. I said, ‘Keep moving forward, keep going forward. You’re going to get through it. You’re the hardest working person I’ve ever met and you’ll persevere through this pretty much.’

“One of the things that we talked about was, it’s not about how many times you get kicked to the curb, or knocked down. It’s about how many times you can get back up and keep moving forward. And I think this (champion’s) red cardigan is not only for Mr. Palmer, but I would say it’s a little bit for Tiger as well, knowing what place he’s in right now.”

DeChambeau’s length off the tee was complemented by great putting when a 40-foot birdie putt on the 4th got him a share of the lead and his 50-foot par putt on the 11th allowed him to keep it.

“Knowing what I know now, it’s obviously the shot of the day for me,” said DeChambeau.

DeChambeau is the first player this season to win multiple events following his U.S. Open title in September and this eighth victory places him at the top of the FedEx standings.

Conditions were tough on Sunday, the wind and fast fairways and greens meant that for the first time since 1980 nobody broke 70. The average score of 75.49 was also the highest since that year. DeChambeau, Andrew Putnam and Matt Wallace shared the lowest round score of 71.

Third-round leader Lee Westwood lost his share of the lead after a three-putt bogey on the 14th and missed a birdie putt on the 16th to close with a 73.

“You can’t want for more than that. I thought we had a really good battle,” said Westwood. “It was never really more than one (shot away) all day, and there were tough conditions out there. It was a day for playing sensible and hanging on.

Corey Conners also fought to stay in contention, coming within one shot of the lead with a 15-foot eagle putt on the 16th. An unfortunate bunker and missed par putt on the 17th then another bogey on the final hole left him with a 74 to finish third at 8-under.

Jordan Spieth was once again in contention, he tied for the lead briefly at the 6th with his last birdie for the day. He closed with three bogeys on his last four holes for a 75 and finished in a tie for fourth at 6-under alongside Andrew Putnam (71) and Richy Werenski (73). Spieth has finished in the top five in his last four events.
